IF they are going to even do another Macross. It’s been ages (8 years+?) since the last arguable flop (Delta).
That’s what I was thinking too, there are only so many ways to make a jet have both a battroid and gerwalk mode.
As you said, this is the Macross sub, you’ll find people recommending every single one of the sequels for various reasons.
Macross Plus and Macross Frontier are pretty universally seen as the highlights of the franchise next to the original with many people who will say they match if not surpass the original. You should definitely watch those at the very least. Great storylines, characters, and top notch animation and dogfights.
If you haven’t seen Do You Remember Love?, which is a movie retelling of the original Macross, you should definitely check that out.
Macross Zero is a prequel to Macross which takes place during the tail end of the Unification Wars and is a fun little OVA that helps tie together Do You Remember Love? and Macross Frontier. Definitely check it out for a more grounded take on Macross combat.
Macross 7 and Macross Delta are the last two major entries and they can be a bit divisive (at least here in the West). They are the entries that are more focused on the music side of things though don’t assume that means the mecha action is missing or anything as both shows have plenty of that. Personally, I recommend at least giving them a shot, if you don’t like them you can just move on. The great thing about the Macross franchise is that despite all being in one continuity with returning characters and storylines each individual show is written to stand on its own so you won’t be lost if you decide one show isn’t for you.
Personally, I’m a pretty big fan of every entry, even my least favorite entry, Delta, is still better than the average anime imo it’s just not quite up to the standards set by the others. But even then it’s worth watching for the sequel movie Zettai Live which has a ton of great throwbacks to earlier shows, including the original.

Edit: Forgot to mention: currently there is no legal way to watch the Macross sequels as far as streaming is concerned. That should change relatively soon as all of the Macross sequels are slated to release on Disney+ in the near future, if you have a VPN though you don’t have to wait. If you want physical media, Macross Plus and Macross Zero are currently available in the West on crunchyroll’s store and presumably the rest of the franchise will be coming soon. This is all obviously a work in progress but releases are happening. Fortunately, a lot of the recent Japanese releases have English subtitles so if you have a blu-ray player that can play Japanese blu-rays you could always import from Japan. The two Delta movies have english subtitles, as do the recent Japanese release of Zero and the upcoming release of Do You Remember Love
If you’re a fan of the Macross Saga of Robotech, then the sequels of Macross are definitely worth a watch. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of the sequels in Macross. The characters are as compelling as the ones from the original series. Maybe start by watching Macross Zero to ease you into it. It’s a prequel to the original Macross at the cusp end of the unification war. Also, it’s a good time to jump into the Macross animes, as a new anime was announced last year.
The Delta back lasers being dropped on is entirely intentional. The Multipurpose Container Unit is interchangeable.
Delta Flight uses one Laser Cannon and a set of Shield Drones/Remote Drone Charger (used for Walkure on the ground) or a Twin Beam Turret (when in space). Leon used his MPCU for thirty-six missile launchers.
Same. Yeah, the most they can do is probably change how the arms and wings fold away or how the head folds out.
I’ve just become aware of it and outside of the original VF-1 and VF-2SS that appeared in Macross 2, I really like the VF-25. Mostly because it harken back to the original F-14 with it’s Variable swept wing design, albeit much more sleek.
It is a little slender, but it sort of makes sense with jet design moving to a more sleek look. The way the wings are folded back is very cool looking to me.
Can’t deny that, fell in love the moment it transformed.
I want to like it, but the tiny waist and the way it’s thrusting it’s dick forward are real turn offs for me.

Dude a little mistake there. It’s Macross Frontier and Macross Delta that were the last 2 major entries. Macross 7 was the second or third entry since it was produce at the same time as Macross Plus.
Thanks for the in depth answer. I have in fact seen Do You Remember Love?, Macross II (although from what I understand it’s considered an alternate universe) and some of Macross Plus Vol 2. The problem is, I was probably too young for most of it.
Do You Remember Love? was pretty shocking considering how much darker it was compared to what I witnessed in Robotech. Macross II I liked, but not having any of the same characters and my perceived disrespect of the SDF-1 put me off as a kid and I couldn’t connect with Macross Plus at all.
But I was maybe 10 at that point and finding them in video rental stores. I will certainly take your recommendations and try to find a way to watch them.

Alright, cool, thank you for the advise! I never cared for the second series in Robotech (being a completely different anime and story) and never saw the third, but Macross Saga has always been one of my very favorite shows. I just got the Robotech Macross Saga blu ray and have been really enjoying it. I’ll try to jump into the full Macross series sometime in the near future.
I saw you mentioned a new series, which is sort of exciting to see that while Harmony Gold is wasting Robotechs potential, the true Macross series itself has been alive and well.
Sap packs are dropped on as well and interchangeable but they look far more integrated and appealing. The lasers on the back look spindly. The ostrich and elintseeker packs are the same idea and I find those more integrated than the packs in delta. Of course it is personal preference. You very correct about the delta Valkyrie’s, but I find they look almost anemic and fragile. Still miles better then having no new Macross though 
What I would like to see is a Macross version of today’s real world fighter aircraft like the Raptor and the F35. I haven’t watched a Macross show since the one with Sheryl Nome which for me wasn’t great.
Yup, it resembles the VF-1 which was inspired by the real life F-14. It being like a next-gen VF-1 is why I like it so much.
How do you feel about the VF-31? It doesn’t have the forward crotch and has a thicker waist.
