Step-by-step How to create VPN through home network please?

I’ll be in the hospital for at least a week. I have a Nighthawk SB6190 and a Netgear R7000P. I want to set up a VPN so I’m able to safely access the hospital wifi since I have a limited data plan. I don’t want to use my data while I’m there. Can anyone direct me? I have xfinity and they offer VPN but you have to be at a higher tier than I’m at.

No one is going to type up a complete step by step when it’s already been done dozens of times on blogs and websites, and there are countless YouTube videos detailing the steps too.

The hospital Internet is probably more locked down and safe due to HIPPA requirements than anything you’re doing at home. So connecting to it “raw” is not going to be dangerous. Almost certainly they have rock solid Client Isolation implemented because of HIPPA. All your other traffic is likely encrypted too, from common websites to niche Apps.

If you’re that paranoid, how do you trust your cell phone data provider more than you trust a hospital? How can you ever safely use the Internet at all? Someone along that vast chain of Internet connectivity might be lying, so better to never use it.

I find peace in long walks.

What are you actually trying to do? Public WiFi is fine. Just don’t stick your credit card info in a website that’s not using TLS and nothing bad will happen.

First off, there are thousands of step by step guides to setting up VPNs on YouTube. A 2 second google search would take you where you need to go. It literally took you longer to make this post.

Second off, a VPN doesn’t do what you’re trying to accomplish. You cannot remotely access your home internet from someone else’s internet you still need the internet in order to gain access to your vpn. It sounds like you think that you can use your home internet to avoid data costs by routing your data usage through your home internet. But that’s not how that works. Not at all.

You’ll need to use the hospital’s wifi if they have it, or your own data plan on your cellphone.

A VPN isn’t going to help you, unless I don’t understand what your goal is.

Unless you’re trying to access services hosted at your home, there’s really no need for VPN. Everything is pretty much TLS by default these days, so whether the traffic is egressing via the hospitals Internet connection or your home Internet connection, it’s still going over the public Internet. So there’s not really much benefit for accessing public services.

Well, I’m not sure the hospital “guest” network has the same amount of security that they use for hospital records? I wasn’t asking anyone to type it up, just point me to where I might find it because I’m not quite sure what I’m looking for to google it. And I’m not paranoid, I just don’t like to use public networks and would rather err on the side of caution. Thanks for the “help”.

I was just about to ask this.
IF they were looking to vpn into their home network… what are they hoping to achieve? VPN directly into a home pc?

I never use public wifi. I either want to access the hospital’s wifi safely OR access my home network in order to use my home wifi? Can that be done? Or would I use data accessing my home network? I just want to not use data as I have a limited plan.

Just use public wifi safely. I don’t know what (if anything) can be accessed if I use public wifi? I have no idea, I’ve never really used it. I usually just use my data plan bc I’m not on my phone much when I’m out but it won’t take long to eat up my meager data plan when I’m in for a week.

I don’t think they’re doing anything that complicated, they’re just falling for the NordVPN marketing that you need a VPN to safely use public WiFi and are getting it conflated with some Comcast product.

Not when I’m not sure what I’m looking for. I could spend half a day wading through youtube and google results trying to figure out what I should be actually searching for. I thought I could create my own vpn to use to access public wifi safely, if that makes any sense.

My data plan is only 1G because I’m normally in wifi 99% of the time. This is why I’m trying to figure out how to create a private VPN to access the public hospital wifi through. I’m starting to wonder what my goal is myself.

I find joy in reading a good book.

Just get a device that sends out random MACs and, if prompted, send out random or encrypted information.

You’d have to use their wifi network to connect to your vpn. One way or another you’re using their internet.

Frankly, the mere fact you’re using Reddit, likely on a mobile phone, means you’re giving more information than any public network is gonna take(unless that network forces you to sign in through a website).

Edit: 10 seconds in your post history. I have a picture of your back yard, your dog, details about your husband, a general idea of your hobbies and interests, etc. more nefarious people could find your exact address with what you’ve posted. And you’re worried about connecting to hospital wifi?

Interesting.

Just use the public wifi. Any traffic to your bank website, etc is encrypted anyway.

Thanks. I just want protection if I use a public (hospital or other) network. It wouldn’t matter if I used the home bandwidth. The reason I brought up the home network is that I’d asked for recs for VPNs on another subreddit and someone suggested creating my own so I’m trying to find how to do that. Thanks for the suggestions.

I don’t care if someone knows what kind of dog or backyard I have. I don’t care if someone has a general idea of my hobbies… I care if someone can possibly access passwords, etc. If that’s not possible on a public wifi, just say so instead of making snarky remarks. Better yet, if that’s how you’re going to respond, don’t respond at all.

What about my usernames/passwords, etc. that are stored on my phone?
