MEGA VPN is keeping logs (and allowing false copyright claim throughput)

I received this email from MEGA, regarding their VPN:

It’s related to a TV show I have no interest in watching, ever, and have never touched the file they are referring to.

That being said, two things are most frightening:

  1. I could be accused of the actions of another user (which is the case here)

  2. Logs are being kept, as to which user is using the VPN in what way

MEGA storage is excellent, what happened here?

Mullvad vpn is one of the trusted vpns, it’s also anonymous and privacy focussed

Yeah i got that letter too, and I can’t even access my mega account to delete it, what should i do

Yeah exactly the same thing happened to me. Tried to make a post here. Big hollywood and TV names. 5 emails in a row. Never consumed such media .

I don’t trust mega anymore I have vpns that have been proven in court and audits to not save logs and I am in the process of moving all my files to a Synology drive so I can control it never trust a company

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

We are aware of copyright notices having been sent to the wrong users of MEGA VPN.

We apologise for this.

As mentioned in the email you would have received, if you believe there has been a mistake or misidentification in relation to the notice, please contact us by responding to the email.

Sorry again for the inconvenience.

We are keen to sort this out for you and will do so as soon as you contact us.

Thanks! ^TT

NORDVPN… been using it for a while. Never got a notice ever.

Your 2 points are contradictory.

If you really didn’t download that file and they truly kept comprehensive logs of users and their usage of the VPN, they would’ve sent the email only to the correct user. The fact that they’re probably sending this email to any user that fits some kind of criteria means that they probably don’t store comprehensive logs and can’t figure out who exactly broke the rule.

I also received a warning from MegaVPN about this?

Submitter of notice: ViacomCBS Inc.
Content: Star Trek - Deep Space Nine 1993 Season 2 Complete 720p AI Upscale DVD x264 [i_c]

I have no interest and know nothing about it?

Those who got these letters, have you been visiting any kind of piracy platforms? Torrenting something else or just streaming?

I received a similar email about a copyright claim. I have no desire to download and watch an episode of the new Matlock show and it bothers me that a false claim can be generated just like that and a strike put against my account.

If anyone is looking for a deep-dive into VPNs I can really recommend checking this spreadsheet out. It has a TON of info in it!

What they playing at?

Yeah, but you claim your connections are private and that you keep no logs. I was considering Mega vs Proton for storage, vpn and password, I guess I’ll go with proton.

The fact that they’re probably sending this email to any user that fits some kind of criteria means that they probably don’t store comprehensive logs and can’t figure out who exactly broke the rule.

That’s even more bothersome, since I got one of those notices. Because that means a bad actor somewhere else can cause me to lose access to my data and I did nothing wrong. Guess Ill start backing up the most important stuff somewhere else as a backup right now.

So they are sending out random emails to random people?

I thought the whole point of a VPN was to surf anonymously?

ViacomCBS Inc.
All strikes are from them

Torrenting Emulation stuff. I’ve Uninstalled VPN. The letter doesn’t say if you were Up/Downloading?

Exactly my concern re account standing. So weird having emails from a email address beginning ‘complaints’ for something you never searched for. Asked them this to confirm how it affects my account hopefully reassurance will happen
