Like the title says. I have recently moved and can’t get internet where I’m at but I have unlimited data on my cell. I was using PDAnet but I was having an issue so I found PairVPN. Initially, it worked great…Then, I had to update Battlefield 2042 last night. Connected PairVPN, opened up Metro PCS account just to make sure the update wasn’t being counted towards my Hotspot usage, but it was. PairVPN was connected without problem. Any suggestions? thanks!
Determining that data is being tethered vs them knowing where and what tunneled traffic consists of are different things.
They often detect this via TTL
Did you set it up as they say on their hotspot page, where you install software on both the phone and pc? Maybe the tunnel between the phone and pc went down, so the pc reverted to regular hotspot?
So, I have been doing a little digging and finally got pairVPN’s log open. Right before it disconnects me, it says “Multicast Denied”, then immediately after, Connection closed. Any ideas? Does that mean anything to anyone?
What device is Battlefield on? I’ve heard reports of xbox and playstation leaking hotspot data such as you are describing, even when using a “workaround” like PairVPN
Your ISP will see your data access, they won’t see that it is from a different device. The point of PairVPN is to use a VPN tunnel between your PC and Phone to bypass hotspot speed restrictions.
I get about 200 Mb/s on my phone with a meh signal in my apartment, but when I connect my PC to hotspot, I am limited to 5 mb/s… PairVPN lets me get the 200 or whatever connection my phone is currently getting. My provider still sees all the data, and that is fine, I have an unlimited plan, but my speed limit is gone.
Even using a VPN tunnel from your PC to the Netherlands will still cause data to flow through your provider, that they measure, that data is just encrypted and can’t be read, if that makes a bit more sense. ALL PairVPN is doing, is hiding access that happens over the wifi hotspot, to whichever devices have pair on them, by encrypting that data and making it unreadable, even by sneaky apps that limit connection speeds, until it is past the hotspot portion of the connection. However, you could use any VPN to get the same results, but you will be at the mercy of your VPN provider, where Pair is doing wifi only.
This isn’t your normal VPN. Are you familiar with PairVPN? It’s meant to mask whatever you tethered to, so that the server provider sees it as my Mobile Device accessing the internet, and not my external (connected) device…
Yes…I set it up the way it says. I downloaded the software on both Mobile device and PC. Set my phone to SERVER and my PC to CLIENT. Connected it via USB tether, then turned PAIRVPN on my phone, then hit the toggle on the PC to connect. It said, Tunnel - 3. I was watching PairVPN display the up and download usage, but Metro PCS was counting it too…No, PDAnet was closed on both PC and phone at this point. PDAnet, for some reason, was constantly disconnecting when I would play a gmae online. Mainly Battlefield. I was able to connect to a BF2042 server, but within 2 minutes, PDAnet would pop up saying “reconnect failed”. I assumed it had something to do with PDAnet not able to keep up with the data transfer speeds…but idk
I just checked it again. I turned on USB Tethering on my phone, Turned on PairVPN on phone, turned it on on my computer. It said I was “Connected with Unrestricted Access” on both ends. I turned on YouTube and let 2 videos play. WHen I first connected it was 2.6GB used of Mobile Hotspot (NOT MY UNLIMITED PLAN. THAT IS NOT BEING TOUCHED). After 3 youtube videos, I refreshed my Metro account page and it was already at 3.1Gb. Any suggestions?
Your issue is the ttl of the packets coming from your PC
Tmo and vzw are notorious for using ttl to distinguish between device data and hotspot data. You need a router that you can see the ttl for all packets going through it.
With PairVPN, are you able to select an alternative endpoint? Seems like the unique way that PairVPN works, that the phone is itself the actual endpoint, which in the end might create something similar to how PDAnet works. In which case they would still have many ways of detecting (or strongly guessing at) what you’re doing.
I wonder if you could simultaneously use a real VPN on the phone along with PairVPN. Provided MetroPCS still allows real VPN traffic to be unlimited data.
