Indian Government is about to make it mandatory for VPN companies to store logs!

The government is going to announce it’s new cyber laws in June 2022 which includes the one in the title. Now, how is this going to affect tor?..Will tor comply with the government?

Tor isn’t a VPN company, so they’re probably not affected by this. Furthermore, Tor is open source so my relay will simply not log.

Good thing they have no jurisdiction outside of India. It will literally have no effect on the state of things. Any privacy-first VPN companies in India will either move or shut down. Since TOR nodes are not VPNs, node operators are not affected by this.

fuck indian government.

The Tor Project can’t comply as we don’t run the Tor network. ciao!

So don’t use an Indian VPN.

It will be just as successful as net neutrality was:joy::rofl:

announce as in “it’s like this since today, stfu and deal with it”?

They should worry more about hygiene and not shitting in the streets vs vpn logging

Idiot government regulating tech they don’t understand.

Tor had funding from the US navy ages ago, I see their people around every once in a while

(Paul Syverson once crept up on me at a poster session, I felt bad I didn’t recognize him, nice guy.)

If focus more on things like not having to suddenly say all your 100s are invalid.

Also if you’re just using Tor for censorship circumvention, layering VPNs can be good, and proxychains is your friend.

If anything meets their definition of a “VPN company”, it will probably be your relay… and if the definition they choose does sweep you in, then your use of software that doesn’t support the legally required logging is not going to be a defense.

That was my initial guess… However, is it not possible that the government declares that using an “Unauthorised” network is a criminal offence?

who’s gonna expain it to the cop knocking your doors?

do you still run a relay!!
i am thinking of doing it, now

I believe it is the Prime Minister Modi that is “in charge” and the wish to discriminate against the Muslims.

Sort of like Trump discriminating against people from Mexico.

Yeah, I don’t think so. Majority of the population here either doesn’t know what VPNs are or doesn’t care about them. There just won’t be enough outrage. They’ll easily pass this as a law.

and maybe your country’s gov should make internet cheap so u dumb asses can update your so called “general awarness”.

There is nothing wrong with shitting behind a bush

They can declare that all they want to, the issue comes to where the rubber meets the road. Traditional VPNs aren’t terribly hard to blacklist the exit nodes, but Tor nodes and dVPNs (decentralized VPNs) use individual’s private IP addresses to access the internet making things significantly more difficult to block without blacklisting wide ranges of IP addresses.
