Do I need a VPN for traveling Europe?

Hello guys, I never use vpn and all I know about it is that you have a safe and secure browser with it and I’ll be in several countries in Europe soon and I’ll probably use a lot of different WiFi networks and I don’t want to get hacked so do you think I need a vpn and if which one is the best?

I just finished a year of travel in/around europe and relied on VPN several times. Some things just cannot be done without it. (banking, purchases in usd…, sites blocked by some countries)

Someone else will need to comment on the whole security issue.

No. Unless you have a special need like you want to watch Netflix, Amazon videos or use a app with geo restrictions. A VPN requires a lot of computing power and will drain you battery very fast. All web sites for years have been encryption by default for years. You are also going to be moving around using different WiFis for short periods of time making it very difficult for an attacker to gain much information. Just use the same precautions you use now. If you sill think you need a VPN you can buy a travel router Inets are very popular, but’s it would be a hassle to use, Enjoy your vacation, don’t sweat the tech.

Very nice information. NO I don’t care if they can see what apps I use. I care if for some reason they can grab money from my bank apps?
Thats the main reason I wanted a vpn .

Mmm you think I need it? And which one you recommend? Thanks

Lol thanks I guess I don’t need it. BTW do you know if I need a new Sim card in order to have data for Internet access?

I asked my phone card company and they said for Europe I don’t need a new sim card just with the current one just buy data and go!
I’m just asking because I saw a lot of people in other posts say the buy new cards when they travel to an other country.
(BTW I’m from Europe schengen area and the countries that I’ll visit are too)

it’s hard to know which one is good, especially for privacy. There’s lots of money going into advertising and everyone with an opinion also has an affiliate link.

I happen to use PIA ( privateinternetaccess.com ). It works adequately. Can’t really say if it’s better or worse than others. It allows me to fake my presence just about anywhere in the world. Also has a bunch of “streaming optimized” locations, ability to install on my android phone and PC.

That is yes/no. Sort of depends who is your mobile provider. Some like AT&T will simply charge you $10 a day. While T-mobile gives you free data (at various speeds). So check with your carrier what specifically their international plan is. If it is expensive, then consider getting a local sim. Not sure if the phone has to be unlocked though.

I would not use you US phone company they charge $10 per day even if you send one small IM. Get a SIM in Europe. Probably Orange. Last two trips I didn’t buy a SIM used WifIf, Google Offline maps. Was a slight inconvenience at times, but nothing major.

So I guess I skip the vpn. Thank you very much my friend.!

But in my situation they said I’ll be charged extra for Internet data and I’ll just use mine. I’m not sure what I need to do.

What countries will you need service in?

AUSTRIA Netherlands Spain Belgium France Czech Germany

Phone unlocked? Just buy a SIM when you arrive probably Orange. I think they provide coverage in the countries you will be traveling to

By any chance are you from an EU or an EEA country? If so, your provider is not allowed to charge you extra for data in the EU.

How you know if phone is unlocked ?
And are there different sim colours?

I’m from Europe schengen area and every country that I will visit is in schengen area too and I asked on my esim provider and they said to me that I don’t need an other card just add data and go!

In the US phones are “locked” to carriers. Maybe not we’re you are. Orange is the name of the phone service in Europe

Good!

Be careful though: the no-cost-roaming agreement covers the EU and EEA and not Schengen. There is one Schengen country, which is not covered: Switzerland. It is very likely that logging to a Swiss network will be costly for you.

Enjoy the trip!

Oh and if is locked you don’t have access in other countries? I didn’t know that.
