VPNs Quest 2 and China - Will it work?

I usually live in China and want to buy a Quest 2, however I suppose I’ll need a VPN for Facebook/Oculus store. Anyone know if it’ll work in china?

Thanks!

For those that are wondering what to do. I got mine booted on a VPN WIFI network. (Initial boot must be on wifi with VPN) then after that I installed the Clash client (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.kr328.clash&hl=en_US&gl=US). I purchased servers for Clash using AgentNEO (https://neoproxy.org/). (use the Vmesh servers) Then loaded the server URL provided by AgentNeo in Clash. You can boot Clash as a normal Android app in the Quest. Send it to your Quest using SideQuest.

If it is the same as the Quest, then I believe the only way it currently works is if you setup your PC as a hotspot, have VPN connected there and then connect the Quest to that hotspot. In my testing (and others) tethering to a smartphone that has VPN connected doesn’t work and VPN directly from the Quest doesn’t work. My understanding is that the Quest’s firmware prevents sideloaded VPN apps from establishing a connection.

When my friend went to the china she used veepn. It’s here promo for discount OFF51

We had to deploy a router with VPN for the Quest to work at our company. It is a big hazzle. Perhaps the idea from Pike!Rick can also work. I can also confirm making your phone into a hotspot doesn’t seem to work.

Hi, did you ever get this figured out? I’ve been trying all day to set up a connectify hotspot connection on PC with vpn and it’s like everything’s going wrong. Internet connection is buggy, vpn is buggy, the damn quest doesn’t let me do a thing with it until it updates itself which it CANT, I’m wondering if you had any success?

so i just got my brand new quest 2 for Christmas and I’m having some problems with the connection to my router so im just wondering if u guys can help me. i got a Xiaomi router and it says on my quest its “connected, no internet connection” then “limited connection”. something else about an invalid IP address as well. my dad says we have some sort of vpn router but thats clearly not working so can anyone tell me how i should set it up?!?!?!?!/

Well…Facebook and google works great in China with a vpn. So I don’t see why not.

If you are buying them on 京东 then you shouldn’t worry about it. Facebook doesn’t work in China, that you don’t even need an Facebook account to use it. And people are giving good reviews about it

I heard from a colleague something about a Xiaomi partnership. Not sure on the details though. Hoping we can find a way around it without the VPN hassle.

I have a question. I’m thinking of getting a quest 2, and know that a router with a VPN is probably the safest option, but it costs around as much as the headset to buy and set up. I have friend with VPN’s on their WIFI though, and was thinking of logging into facebook and setting up the quest on their WIFI, then just using the app for everything else since I have a VPN on it. Do you think this would work, or would I need a VPN everytime I wanted to use my quest?

I did, I bought a CMlink SIM in the UK, and use roaming data as a hotspot, no VPN needed. The sim only works if you activate in the EU though

Now wondering if you had any success? I’m in the same boat!

You would need a VPN wifi network for every time you reboot the Oculus Quest. Also you would require a VPN wifi network for anything related to multiplayer or your online account. this means that, you could enjoy your Oculus Quest for everything single player, that you downloaded while being on your friends network. After 5 years of this bullshit, I suggest you just buy a Pico and accept China has won.

Damn, no chance for me to do that then. My quest is basically a brick now since it’s not even able to update itself…

Damn thanks for posting about CM Link. I actually constantly get ads about them in WeChat, thought was cool but never looked into it until you mentioned it could work with Oculus! Buying one now, going back to China in 4 days, will see how it do:)

I’ll message you later about how to fix it if you haven’t already? I just set mine up yesterday and figured out a workaround for the setup process

Fair enough. Thanks for the advice.

Just another thought; i’ve heard of ways of sideloading different VPN’s directly to the Quest 2. It might not work I’m sure but it is a better option overall. I’ve tried a pico and let me tell you it is not worth it when tethered, so this seems like a better option. Do you know anything about this?

Yo, please send me the details. I can’t get it to work.
