I was using Stremio last night with the VPN turned on and closed without realizing I didn’t have “close program when window closed” checked. VPN was still on. Fast forward to this morning: turned PC on from sleep, VPN still on, turned off VPN for normal web browsing (off for about 20 minutes) and saw the it was still running in Task Manager. Opened Stremio to see it was paused on the last show I was watching (Game Of Thrones). So: 20 minutes of no VPN using Torrentio to watch Game Of Thrones.
I now have my VPN set to turn on automatically at startup and always run in the background.
My question is this:
Is there still traffic to and from my IP address when Stremio is paused and the window is closed?
Is there still traffic to and from my IP address when Stremio is paused and the window is closed?
This is a great question.
In theory if you disable caching it shouldn’t “download ahead”. If caching is enabled, it will download until the size of the cache or until the video ends, whichever comes first.
If your internet is fast and the torrent has enough seeds, it’ll probably fill the cache/download the video before you finish watching, so it’s improbable (but possible) that it was downloading while paused.
If you want to be safe, disable caching or activate some sort of killswitch for stremio at the VPN (if that’s even possible). Keep in mind that if you disable caching it won’t be able to load the video while paused (which could be important for videos with lower seeds).
I’m not 100% sure on this, I’m pretty sure if no data was being collected from anyone because it didn’t need to buffer then you’ll be alright.
What I would recommend is spending a couple dollars/pounds/euros a month for real debrid. This is an absolute game changer and will give you not only the benefit of not needing a VPN but also better quality streams
I’ve DM’d you my referral link, if you’re buying real debrid if you wouldn’t mind could you buy it through there? It won’t cost you anymore it just adds points onto my account that’s all! Thank you either way!
