Paid for a month of Astrill today only to discover that it doesn’t work with Chromebooks other than with the dedicated router.
Do any VPNs that do support Chromebooks work satisfactorily in China?
Thanks!

You should find a vpn with a proxy extension for chrome.
But frankly if you stay in China for a while I would reconsider the chromebook.
I haven’t tried this but put astril on your phone connected to wifi and tether the Chromebook?
Astrill supports the OpenVPN app on Android, that should work on the Chromebook as well:

You sure you cant find the Astrill package on websites like Aptoide? I thought you couod install Android apps on Chromebook. Thought maybe the is doesnt work
It won’t work on the chromebook itself, I used to have a chromebook eons ago. Only thing that will work on them is regular socks proxies that you can add with chrome. If you’ve got another computer at home you can setup Astrill to share locally and connect to it with socks, then it’ll go through the other computer.
Does not work like that.
Maybe with a rooted device or from a pc, but it’s not really straightforward (need a particular wifi card or special software like connectify).
This. It works with some WiFi tethering app that doesn’t require root and connects through a proxy.
Astrill’s site says that OpenVPN will not work in China.
I was able to find and install the app via the Play Store, but it does not provide the VPN functionality on the Chromebook, verified as a not-supported platform by Astrill support.
Really? That’s too bad
Non supported doesnt mean it doesnt work… i use it on my tvshield and my sony tv even if its not supported.
Im a bit surprised when you write you were able to find it but it doesnt provide VPN function. But again i dont know chromebooks
I agree with you. But it doesn’t work, and Astrill support says it doesn’t work at least by default. I posted hoping someone might know how to get it working or a reasonable alternative.
Yes i got it. My point was more that Astrill support told me it doesnt work on Android TV and it does.
Hoping someone likewise can tell me how to make it work on Chromebook.
