Use Mac (or maybe iPhone) as VPN proxy + internet source for another Mac

I’m trying to be able to use a work Mac from a non-US location (Africa) without installing a VPN on the device itself, as the work laptop has to connect to a company VPN (and the company has policies against installing unapproved software).

I originally wanted to use my iPhone as a VPN + hotspot, but the “Hotspot VPN” apps I tried don’t seem to actually mask my location. I think this isn’t possible due to the nature of hotspots.

Another option I am trying is to use my personal Mac with a VPN as an internet tether. I’m having issues with this as well as it seems kind of unstable, and whenever I connect the VPN on my personal Mac it doesn’t seem to work at all. (Gets stuck with the yellow dot and never assigns a router/DNS server).

Does anyone have experience using this type of configuration, and if so, what worked for you?

Best to do is buy a travel router that has this functionality built in

Talk to you IT group! most will support some sort of VPN for travel!

Any recommendations? Also I suppose this assumes I have access to a router/cable internet — I am hoping to be able to use my phone hotspot down the line.

I have the Beryl model listed here GL.iNet Routers and Gateways Selection - GL.iNet
You can use these router to relay a wired or wireless connection. You can plug your iPhone in to provide the Internet connection too.
The main point is that the router can run the VPN while providing the wireless network. Then the network traffic from the devices connected to the travel router network are routed through the VPN. The devices won’t be able to detect this.
