So, Apparently you CAN'T record or stream Dragon Quest XI S in 2D Mode and upload it to YouTube/Streaming Platforms...?

I was reading through the rules of the streaming guidelines from my earlier post ( https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/comments/d4cmzf/dragon_quest_xi_ss_streaming_and_video_guidelines/ ) AND I was incredibly kafuddled about this rule in particular:

Dragon Quest XI S Video and Streaming Guidelines:https://nintendoeverything.com/dragon-quest-xi-s-full-site-open-gameplay-video-and-live-streaming-guidelines/

I made another post just for this rule in particular just because I wanted to highlight how confusing it is.

If it means what I think it means, it basically translates to/ comes across as:

Square: “Oh? I see that you want to record our game in 2D Mode, sorry, but we don’t do that here!”

Me: “But I just want to record and share your-”

Square: “I SAID NO RECORDING THE DAMN GAME IN 2D MODE! Oh, and you know how you have a Youtube Channel and Livestreaming Platform? Well, since you uploaded content in 2D Mode, we’re going to copyright strike you! Congrats, you’ve just lost your Livestreaming Platform and Youtube Channel! Have a great day! :D”

\“No 2D Mode Recording Allowed…?\” Rule.

I am not a lawyer or someone who specializes in streaming copyright issues, so If I am misinformed on this topic, please let me know in the comments below and I will update this post.

I just want people to be aware of this issue!

TLDR; You can’t record Dragon Quest XI S in 2D Mode, or else you may get copyright striked on your platform of choice and then potentially lose everything.

Thank you for your time and have a great day!

UPDATE: This was apparently a really bad mistranslation by Square Enix and Nintendo! Here are the details, HUGE THANK YOU TO GaijinB for clearing this up!

I also made comments to inform people of the mistranslation, which you can see here!: https://nintendoeverything.com/dragon-quest-xi-s-full-site-open-gameplay-video-and-live-streaming-guidelines/

It would mean so much to me if all of you could pitch in and share both this Reddit post and the big comment that I made on the page around so Dragon Quest XI S does not get bad Public Relations due to this potentially fatal mistranslation!

GaijinB, THE REAL MVP!

Ok this got me super confused so I went to check the Japanese page for the guidelines and I think it’s just a bad translation + poor formatting on the page you linked (the example is on a separate bullet point).

Refrain from using DRAGON QUEST XI S content in a two-dimensional format. (Ex. Redistribution of DRAGON QUEST XI S content in printed or other media for commercial or non-commercial purposes.)

The original was:

公開した内容の二次利用は行わないでください。
例)公開した内容をまとめて冊子などの別の媒体での再配布は、有料・無料にかかわらずご遠慮ください。

Which would roughly translate to:

Do not reuse your livestreamed material for a secondary purpose. (e.g. Collecting livestreamed/captured material and printing it/releasing it as a booklet, for commercial or non-commercial purposes).

Anyway they mistranslated 二次利用 (secondary usage or something) to two-dimensional (二次元 = 2D).

Squenix or Nintendo, who do I contact to get paid for my fixing of your translation?

EDIT: The Japanese page is here, I know other users on this sub know Japanese and there are even actual translators on here I’m sure so they can do a better job than me (and apparently than Squenix).

This may seem confusing, but what you need to understand is that by Japanese law, Squeenix are required to have at least one arbitrary, unenforceable restriction that everyone on this side of the Pacific will ignore without consequence. It’s in their Constitution or something.

If it turns out to be what I think it is, all I have to say is:

What. The. Actual. FUCK. This not only hurts English content creators, but it hurts Japanese content creators, as well!

About a decade ago or so, JP tightened up copyright laws in this field. If you play JP ver. games (only), you would be familiar with this copyright notice in the beginning of EVERY (JP ver.) game. It’s basically a shorten ver. of what SE put up in this DQ11S case. Back in the old days, SE only just flag and block certain FMVs in (JP ver.) FF games. This even holds true for the original PS4 JP DQ11. Anyway, about five years ago or so, there was this company called Atlus JP, they took this to the next step using “no spoiler” excuse and basically ban people from uploading/streaming contents of Persona Q, SMT4f, Q2, Persona 5…etc AND so it looks like SE wanna join Atlus JP. Not much can be done at JP home base, but oversea been having this easy so maybe write them something and let them know or give them the backlash!

YOU are awesome! THANK YOU SO MUCH! That really does put me at ease! You’re the best! Got really angry and stressed out there for a second! Hahahaha!

I’ve also notified the author of the article on Twitter that the translation he was given had some errors in it! Hopefully, it’s not too late to fix the mistakes!

You’d think that they would have learned by example when Atlus tried to do similar things when Persona 5 initially launched. I hope to The Almighty Zenus himself that these rules are just temporary measures to prevent spoilers and to prevent people from ruining the game for others. All I can see coming from this is MASSIVE backlash…

It’s just a mistranslation

So 3 years after the fact. And I was hyped to stream but now I’m nervous. Did you end up streaming it? Was hyped as hell until I did research. If it’s just 2D I won’t use it. Wasn’t really going to anyway.

Atlus JP, since Persona Q, to SMT4f, Persona 5, Persona Q2, was ACTIVELY BANNING contents past certain point on YT, NicoNico and streaming platforms. All I can say is they been going easy on oversea. DQ11 JP (PS4) was perfectly fine until the ending which is automatically blocked (similar to their JP ver. FF games), but I guess SE decided they wanna join Atlus JP to become the last TWO JRPG companies that will BAN your ass lmao /shrug Oh well, Persona 5 Royal will get a free pass on this just like SMT Strange Journey remake did, then ban hammer festival again whenever SMT5 comes. SE used to just block endings or certain FMVs, I don’t know what happened, but content makers among JP community will have BOTH SE and Atlus JP to worry now. /sigh

That comment was before the mistranslation was brought to my attention, my bad! In fact, that was my initial reaction to the mistranslated rule. My bad!
