SMB share vpn setup

I want to be able to access my smb share from anywhere, guessing using some sort of vpn is the best way to go?

If so would nordvpn work as im currently with them anyway, and if so how would i go about doing that?

Correct.

Nord is a VPN CLIENT that connects to THEIR SERVERS, not your own.

If you want to access YOUR server from a VPN connection, you need to be running the VPN service on YOUR network, not using a “web proxy application” like Nord.

A lot of common name home routers offer a basic VPN connection option, but a lot of them can be confusing. So you’ll have to check and confirm on your side.

Meaning; a lot will offer the option to configure CLIENT VPN setup (so anything inside your network going out, will be using the VPN service, like Nord in OPs example) but not for incoming connections from the outside. But some do. It just varies by model and manufacturer.

Most all DIY firewall / router braches offer the option to setup the VPN server for you to connect to your home from outside via VPN. (pfSense, OPNSense, DD-WRT, etc) those DIY require a bit of knowledge and know how in networking to be successful in their setup, however.

No, NordVPN is a service or a VPN client, what you need is a VPN server such as Wireguard or OpenVPN.

You could host such a server for free in a docker container on the same server you’re using for your samba share and there are plenty of tutorials available.

Here is a quick tutorial that you should be able to replicate:

Also, check the parameters of your home router, you maybe have a “OpenVPN” option that would allow you to do exactly what you want to do.

I recommend TailScale to get access to your own server when you’re not at home. The free tier gives you a number of devices and you can set quite good controls over how it works. They also have clients for Windows, Android and Linux

Use Wireguard, Softether VPN, or tinc to set up a VPN network between your SMB server and your clients. You can host a VPN server on the same machine as SMB share or on a separate running in the same network as SMB share.

Okay thank you for clearing that up, i just read something on there website about it so i thought to ask
