Proton VPN vs IVPN

has anyone used both services and have an opinion about the differences and who is better?

does IVPN support IPV6 yet, or coming soon?

thank you

I use both. Proton formerly on iPhone and Mac but nowadays Proton only on Mac & IVPN on iPhone.

Regarding your second question yes they support IPV6.

Regarding the Pro and Cons of the services.

Both run very stable, have an easy to use interface and have speeds that are more than enough to have the VPNs always active and use them e.g. in video calls (Zoom, G-Meet, FaceTime etc). I never experienced a delay or something like this.

Proton has a great out of the box solution that is probably enough for most users. They have more countries if geo-blocking is a thing and they are a great deal in combination with the other Proton services (I‘m using their full suite of products like Mail, Drive, Calendar and obviously VPN in one subscription).

The main benefits of IVPN for me are the custom DNS options. I use IVPN with my custom DNS profile from NextDNS. Within this profile I have very specific block lists in order to reduce/block most of the telemetry and tracking of my phone. This works great with IVPN and my workflow benefits from this noticeable.
The only downside I noticed is that I have more captchas with IVPN compared to Proton but I’m not 100% sure if it might be an issue caused by my custom DNS profile.

I would switch completely to Proton VPN if a custom DNS could be added since I pay for Proton anyways. This doesn’t mean IVPN is a bad product. I think it‘s the best VPN on the market but since I have Proton anyways I would save the money for IVPN.

Summary:
If you are interested in the other Proton services the VPN you get in the Bundle is plenty enough for 99% of users.

If you are only looking at a VPN and don’t plan to use any other services than I would go for IVPN. In my opinion it‘s the safest and most private VPN provider available on the market.

When I first tried proton over a year ago, it seemed IVPN was way way faster. Recently the speed difference seems to be less.

IVPN has some nice features for autoconnecting the VPN based on the network in use, which proton lacks. IVPN also has V2Ray obfuscation if that matters to you. Proton seems to have more servers available.

Both solid in my opinion.

iOS is showing IPV6 in settingsSettings in iOS

I’ve used both. I give IVPN the leg up for its built in DNS blocking. Being able to pick from different block list is really cool. Proton offers nothing like that, they don’t even have custom DNS on iOS.

Honestly though you can’t go wrong with either. It just depends what you prioritize and which has the features you want.

thanks everyone for your suggestions; I grabbed a one week sub to test things out, and so far its VERY impressive; IPV6 WORKS, Tons more options than my current VPN provider, just as fast as I expected, and the customer support is top notch!

most likely, I will be dumping my current provider, as there is so much more to IVPN than almost any other VPN provider…

What do you guys think about NordVPN that seems to also be a major player in the field?

thank you for your answer!

I have been using proton vpn only for almost a year now, and the major disappointment for me is the lack of IPV6 support; speeds are usually fine, and lots of servers to configure to work with wiregard/ asus router

i like to have 2 VPN’s at the same time, and since my cyberghost and surfshark subs are over in a few days, I was curious as to how IVPN works

on Proton, in the usa, on my one gig connection, I usually get 300-500 DL speeds; do you think I will see similar ones with IVPN? Do you notice any differences with IVPN having IPV6 support, VS none for Proton?

thanks

are there alot of USA servers available with IVPN, or just a few?

are their servers mostly 10GB?

thanks

thanks!

how does the speeds compare to other VPN’s you have used?

i like the ipv6 support, and, not many folks complain about their service

Depends what are your needs but personally I’m happy with Nord. Speeds are good, no bugging, big servers library so for me that’s enough (for general usage).

I’ve found their discounts on r/vpncoupons in here, so take a look if you’ll want to save some bucks too haha.

For reference regarding the speeds:

My home country is Germany so I‘m not getting the best speed when using an US server. For the country specific servers I used the fastest one available without specifically choosing one.

IVPN:
Server Germany: 239mpbs down & 40,8mpbs up
Server US: 189mpbs down & 28,1mpbs up

Proton:
Server Germany: 236mpbs down & 40,3mpbs up
Server US: 192mpbs down & 39,8mpbs up

No VPN:
237mpbs down & 42,2mpbs up - I‘m paying for 250mbps down & 40mpbs up.

I’d also give Windscribe a try before deciding who to invest your next years with.

My list of strong recommendations are: Mullvad, IVPN, Windscribe and (sometimes) Proton.

My issue with IVPN is the constant disconnects, usually on desktop clients. Usually switching server endpoints fixes it. It’s otherwise very good.

The thing I’m not a huge fan of with Mullvad is needing to pick a specific server instead of simply a country/city pair like with IVPN or Windscribe.

But for “turn it on and forget it’s there you never need to do anything with it” WIndscribe always wins out with me. I also like that they have an active discord where you can talk to the staff and CEO directly - they even let you try out new products or features. They also have unlimited connections instead of the 5 or 10 the others limit you to.

There’s a handful of USA servers with IVPN, but not as many as proton has from what I can see. Worth noting not all proton servers offer the same functionality (i.e., tor access, peer-to-peer, etc).

Thing is, YOU need to try it because we all will have different results. Proton may work for me but maybe not with u. Also vice versa with IVPN…try a month with both and see which works best for u in terms of speed

As far as privacy goes their VPN is top tier. From what I hear it doesn’t do so well with unblocking streaming services but that’s not what they focus on. They focus on privacy and transparency.

does windscribe support IPV6? Do they provide the ability to generate router .conf files, using wiregard to connect ?

I’ll go take a closer look, thank you for the comment!
