Plex Remote Access & Express VPN

I am currently in a double NAT (small local company has their router, besides my home router). I’ve inquired about purchasing a public IP, but have not had any luck or received any cooperation on that matter unfortunately.

As of late, I’ve been using Ngrok to allow remote access, however using their free account, I’ve limited the remote access to myself and two other close individuals, fearing I would exceed any bandwidth caps using their free version.

I have an account with ExpressVPN and use that on a separate machine (not the PC running PMS). Since I already have an ExpressVPN account, is it possible to route Plex through the ExpressVPN? From my understanding, ExpressVPN doesn’t offer port forwarding. I do see they offer an Aircove WIFI router with their firmware built in, but with my limited networking experience, I’m not sure if or how to go about setting it up.

Fyi, my current setup is: ISP Router----Ubiquiti GPON----Ubiquiti DM Pro----PC running PMS

I went back and forth between Mullvad and PureVPN. I ultimately chose to try out PureVPN which seems to be working alright, minus one issue with PMS settings. In case anyone is interested due to a CGNAT, if you have a VPN with port forwarding, it seems to be a good work around.

You have your work cut out for you.

Plex does not work easily with a VPN.

Plex does not play nice with multiple network configurations and may end up with issues trying to play locally.

You will need to do some research trying to get both to work and home that you can both working together.

I’ve gotten relay to work through a VPN, but it barfs if the VPN connection changes and, of course, you’re limited by the relay

In theory, if you can get the VPN to provide you a static IP, and you can control port mapping, this can be done

My feeling is that this is beyond your current ability

I had the same issue as you, also with ExpressVPN, and I only figured out a solution literally yesterday - I switched to Mullvad VPN. They have a page on their website walking you through how to use Plex with their service. You might be able to apply the same things to ExpressVPN, I didn’t bother to check, but I followed their instructions to the letter and it works.

Not many VPNs allow port forwarding.

The PMS computer is not also running a VPN right? Or do you?

The static IP part is what I was looking into and currently looking at something like PureVPN who offers a static IP and port forwarding.

Thanks I’ll check it out! Do you recall where on their site the instructions were located? Disregard…Found it:

Pure works, that’s what I use and on a gigabit connection with their dedicated ip I get around 300 up and down
I did find that you don’t need to buy their dedicated ip as plex will auto update the ip used and the port forward settings are maintained no matter what VPN server you connect to

Thanks!! So I would just need to purchase the port forwarding add-on?

Yes, plex almost instantly reestablishes remote access no matter what IP pure uses. Only port forward is needed . There’s also cool Killswitch settings in purevpn
