Is it posible to set up a self-hosted VPN at home that I can connect to from abroad and use a work-oriented VPN client in the PC I plan to use?

Hi everyone

So, I’ve been interested in setting up a self-hosted VPN that allows me to be abroad and be detected as if I was still at my home country. My (barebones) idea is.

  1. Configure a self-hosted VPN on a VPN capable device at my home network.
  2. Have a device that is or acts as a router and connects to the previously mentioned VPN
  3. Finally, connect a given device to that “router”.

You might ask why would I think of needing an additional device sitting between the device I’m going to use and the VPN I plan to connect to, and it’s because I need to run a work-related VPN client, and since I won’t be able to install any aditional non-authorized VPN client, I would need to connect to the VPN as if it was a regular network and at the same time connect to my work’s resources using the aforementioned client.

  • Is this possible?
  • Am I nuts?
  • Is there a better alternative?

Thanks in advance

yes its possible. many home routers already have a VPN option built in. you would then only need a travel router with VPN capabilities. You will also need to set up the VPN server on the router to use the VPN as the default route/gateway for VPN clients.

A lot of times this is just a checkbox that says “allow vpn clients to use my internet connection” or something along those lines.

look into gl.inet for their travel routers.

Yes, get a router that supports setting VPN servers. My UDM from Ubiquiti allows that. I have a Wireguard server set up on mine. Take a UniFi Express with you and set it up as a VPN client.

Thanks for the response.

Is there any guide I can follow in order to set up both devices?

There are multiple articles when you google UniFi Wireguard server and Unifi Wireguard client that should help you out.
