Hey guys! So I was DNing from South America but was laid off a month ago. I’m still in South America now job hunting.
I realized there were very few global opportunities, as most remote jobs require you to be physically located inside the US.
Because of that, I started applying with a VPN (Proton). Now I got an interview for tomorrow and they want to see the environment I plan to work in.
What should I do? Is there any chance they check if I’m running a VPN? Should I close for the interview? Is there anything I can do?
Your post appears to be a very commonly asked question or thread here relating to VPNs and/or hiding your location. Please check out the VPN Wiki for common answers to these common questions. You can also find other recent posts related to this topic here

Wtf are you interviewing for? lol
I went through this and it was just either zoom or teams meetings
This just means it’s a video interview and they want to literally see your workspace. They are assuming you have a stable setup and are not a nomad, probably. Set up a nice space in your apartment, or join a coworking space and book a private room for the interview.
You’re worried about VPNs instead of focusing on what they actually said they want to see - your workspace. Stop worrying about VPNs lol
I have heard of people getting this type of interview and they just want to see if your office is WFH-friendly. Make sure there are no landmarks in the background that give your location away. Do not have signs saying “Viva Argentina!” or similar that they can see.
It sounds like they want to see that you will not be surrounded by barking dogs and crying babies while you talk to customers. I would rent a nice Airbnb with decent WiFi
Zoom/teams etc won’t give them your location in the interview but if you perform your work using proton vpn it will be obvious you are using one for anyone that checks. Check the notes in this sub which explains the best setup
Get some American flags and some fires going through the window, tell them those are blm riots then talk about how there are poo. And homeless people wherever you go in your town
let us know how the interview/job search goes
What do they mean by environment? Like desktop environment or physical environment? Not sure which one would be weirder btw
& Be careful of sounds & reflections!
If you are worried about the vpn ask to someone in your country with a decent router to give you access to his connection through vpn. If you use commercial vpns, the ip is from a cloud center not residential ips.
I wouldnt worry, they just want to see if you have a suitable work environment.
However, I always have a contingency plan. If the VPN works fine they would never even know you were somewhere else unless they had some IT guys looking for it or if some of the things you needed were blocked from a known VPN IP address. Most good VPNs have several different connections from the same location to help this. I use expressVPN and never have had an issue. Im in Colombia now, and my job thinks ive been in Miami as long as ive been employed.
lets say you have another computer, a vpn service like nordvpn or something
in windows, you can make a wifi hotsport, then share the vpn connection adapter somehow and use the other computer to connect to the hotspot
Chill they just want to see your workspace. Just go to a coworking space and rent an office for the day and say that’s the room you have prepared for WFH
They want to see the environment you plan to work in? What is this craziness? Get a temporary office and show them that. Tell them it’s your space room and it’s empty because that stops you getting distracted.
When you say “most remote jobs require you to be physically located inside the US,” I assume you mean “most US remote jobs require you to be physically located inside the US”.
This is an international DN sub, not an American one…:-)…there are many “global opportunities” that don’t require us to be in the USA…
is Proton an app on your current computer? I am trying to work abroad with my new job and am having a tough time figuring out how to do a VPN
Hmm what do you do when they ask for your address if/when you get hired?
Prolly not enough time for this, but you could host your own VPN somewhere on Amazon. It will take sometime to set up, but would work just fine. Would also be undetectable. You could also host vpn in your home or your parents/friend’s home. It will literally look like you’re in their house.
