I wanted to renew my AVG Anti Virus, but when I add it all up it's like $300. Any alternatives?

You do NOT need Driver Updater software, one of the biggest scams ever created in software. Also you do realize there’s decent free antivirus software including what comes with Windows right?? I’ve been using Defender for years and had no issues, even when it first released it was what I’d use if I didn’t want anything else more bloated in the end of the XP days. I never understood these folks that go for the ‘all in one’ packages like that.

AVG is bloatware, it will slow down your computer with no realistic benefit. I’d uninstall it all if I were you, as it’s a legitimate risk to have.

The build-in Windows Security and common sense is more than enough for an antivirus. It will properly warn you of anything suspicious, and does more than enough for protecting you, as long as you’re not visiting a bunch of suspicious sites on the dark web or something. If you are really concerned then the only viable third-party antivirus software that isn’t straight up bloatware is MalwareBytes (which has a free tier).

Also, Windows has their own cleaning and maintenance software that’s free, but it’s mostly simplifying options that already exists on your computer, as an actual software for that isn’t needed. If you really need something to hold your hand through the process though, that’s better than CCleaner, or whatever you use.

As far as driver updates go, the only parts you need to worry about updating is your graphics card (if you have one), and there is already a built-in software for that for each GPU Brand; GeForce Experience for Nvidia and AMD Adrenaline for AMD (links in case they didn’t come pre-installed in your laptop for some reason), which will notify you whenever there’s a driver update, and is much simpler/faster than third-party softwares. It’s not essential for your computer though, it’s mostly performance optimization for newer games and bug fixes.

I swear, “antivirus’” like AVG and Avast has to be one of the biggest scams in the computer industry.

I hear Crowd Strike is solid /s

you only need malwarebytes (FREE) with windows defender

I would pay $300 not to have all of these bloatware.

Windows Defender + Malware Bytes + A VPN of your choosing

why you say that? Av comparative give them pretty good rate detection.

Windows doesn’t update all your drivers…

“You do NOT need Driver Updater software”, -but then how do you update the drivers? I probably sound stupid as fuck, but I’m no expert.

Genuinely they are, they just had a lot go wrong all at once, one time.

Should they have had better practices? Yeah, but it doesn’t mean they’re a bad av

It’s pretty expensive at $300 bucks due to a MOQ of 5 seats.

AV-Test and AV comparatives are sponsored

I never said Windows does. It’s called knowing what parts are in your PC and going to their sites. Got a Nvidia GPU, go to their website, got a MSI motherboard, go to their website, got a Intel CPU, go to their website. Most manufacturers have software to install the drivers for you as well as the drivers themselves on pages for your use. I’ve been aware of this since I’ve had PCs, but didn’t care as much until they were custom built for me by people I knew instead of a business. PC spec software isn’t that hard to download and it’s free, tells you everything in your system including the manufacturers usually.

Go to the website of device and download new drivers, or let windows handle it.

imagine getting downvoted because you ask ‘‘how do I update my drivers’’

this sub is cancerous AF lol

Windows Update takes care of that 99% of the time for you. The only one you will have to do on your own are GPU drivers, and maybe drivers for any specialty peripherals. GPU drives you just type in the (name of your GPU) driver and it will take you to nVidia’s, AMD’s, or Intel’s website where you will just enter in what GPU you have and it will spit out a download button.

Pretty much everything else will be handled by Windows Update.

You look up the model (for example, my laptop is an Inpiron 5577). Then you search that online. Typically you’ll want to update your CPU driver (aka chipset), GPU driver, and network driver.

Or you can just use a good, free, program. I recommend Snappy Driver Installer Origin.

Installing drivers is SO MUCH better than it was 20 years ago. But software like SDIO still have their place. Anyone saying otherwise hasn’t spent enough time learning / maintaining multiple machines lol.

What makes you think most of them don’t auto update ?

Seriously - paying for some software to update your drivers is really stupid and throwing away good money don’t do it

BECAUSE YOUR BUILT IN SOFTWARE DOES IT FOR YOU. Most folks are just too lazy to know how to do it, or otherwise don’t notice the notifications.

You system will let you know when your drivers need to be updated by little pop ups in the bottom corner of your screen. Also, applications that require use of updated drivers will prompt you to update them and usually have a 1 click script to take you there
