Hulu has suddenly decided im using a VPN (im not), and I cant find 'The Office' on Netflix... What the hell is going on?

Been actively watching Hulu and Netflix for hours. Now all of a sudden I cant find ‘The Office’ on Netflix, and Hulu keeps giving me an error saying im using a VPN… Does anyone know what’s happening here?

Generally IPs are marked as “VPN” if they see a lot of different computers connecting from the same IP.

Some possibilities:

  • Someone has hacked your router, and is using you as a VPN endpoint without your knowledge. Update your router firmware
  • Your ISP cycled IPs, and you ended up with one that had previously been a VPN endpoint. You could ask your ISP for a fresh IP.
  • Your ISP is running low on IPs, and so is issuing the same IP to multiple clients (in the same way that any computers on your wifi have the same global IP). This is more likely than you might think. Look up “IPv4 shortage” for more info. Not much you can do in this case, but you could try calling Hulu support. If this is the case, what your modem/router sees as an external IP won’t match what Google or https://whatsmyip.com/ sees.
