How to use NordVPN to watch foreign shows on Amazon Prime

Hi everyone! Last week, I purchased NordVPN’s standard monthly plan because I was under the impression that I could use it to watch a show that is only available on Amazon Prime in Spain (and I live in the U.S.). However, when I downloaded NordVPN and connected to a server in Spain and changed the location of my Prime account to Spain, it still wouldn’t let me watch it and kept redirecting me back to the U.S. catalog of shows and movies. I’m aware that I probably shouldn’t have purchased it just to watch one show and that Prime only allows you to view content available in the region of your billing address, but I just wanted to know if it’s actually possible and if there are things I could do to circumvent these restrictions. This is the first time I’ve ever used a VPN, so I’m totally new to it and am not sure if there’s anything else I have to do in the NordVPN app (like connecting to a certain server or enabling or disabling certain settings) to be able to access Spain’s catalog of shows and movies, so I was just wondering if anybody else has experienced this issue and and found a fix for it. I know this is a very basic question lol, but I’m a total beginner when it comes to VPNs and have tried to do some research to find a solution, but I also just thought I’d ask here as well. Thanks so much!

Something similar happened to me (well, the other way around). I was living in Japan, and I wanted to watch shows on amazon Prime US.

Turns out that the amazon site itself is different. I had an account in amazon.jp, not amazon.com. I could change location and buy things from amazon US, but my account was still on amazon.jp

That is why no matter what vpn I used, I couldn’t watch shows on Prime US. That is, because I was still using the amazon.jp account. Ah, and if I tried to fire up the vpn, and then go to amazon.com with my amazon.jp credentials, it would say I did not have an account there.

That was a few years ago, so ymmv, but maybe the same is happening

Try Firefox with the uBlock Origin extension and the Chameleon extension. In the Chameleon settings, set to macOS 14 - Safari 17 in the Profile section, Disable referer in the Headers section, and set the time zone to Europe/Madrid in the Options section. Use Firefox ONLY for Prime when you’re connected to Spain servers and Chameleon is set - don’t use it for anything else. Amazon is really good at fingerprinting browsers to determine where they’re actually located. Check your results at https://ipleak.net/ when this is set up, let all the DNS tests complete.
If you’re already using Firefox, set this up with the portable version instead.
Depending on your VPN’s DNS server configuration, this may or may not work for you - results are variable. You may have to use DNS over HTTPS with an exclusively European DNS provider in the Firefox settings.

You need to change Nord to OpenVPN UDP in the settings for streaming. I’ve never tried changing my Prime video region so I don’t know how that works but trying what the other comment suggested sounds like a good idea.

obfuscated servers don’t work?

Hi there! Thank you so much for this suggestion, I really appreciate that you took the time to write all of this out for me! I downloaded Firefox, added the extensions you mentioned, made all of the changes to the settings in the Chameleon extension, and when I ran the DNS tests, they said that my server was located in Madrid, Spain, but when I went on Amazon Prime, it still didn’t allow me to access the Spain catalog of shows. I’d like to try and use DNS over HTTPS in Firefox like you mentioned, but I’m just not quite sure how to change that setting or use an exclusively European DNS provider. But once again, thank you so so much!!

You’re going down an interesting rabbit hole, hope you are enjoying it and learning.
On the Amazon front, are you accessing .com or .es? Probably will make the most difference for your catalog. Even .de and .es are operated independently within the EU.

They’re really just making it more necessary to sail the high seas at this point.

Good luck out there…
