Hahahahah, thats the fresh account experience, i only really started using tiktok on my third attempt when someone told me you could hold and click not interested in content you didn’t like and then the algorithm would start showing content you actually is interested/like
If you are able to get this working it is a simpler method, but did you get it to work without having to take out the sim card? And your phone would still need to be in japanase so it doenst cause problems in the app, and that may be a problem for some, just changing the tiktok language didn’t work since it sometimes got rewritem with the system language

Sorry. Autism over share of personal opinion. Btw would shorts not suffice? Isn’t the content there literally identical? And all you’d need to do to get shorts/yt running with jp only recommendations is to either A) only watch jp content for a while which takes time, or B)make a new channel(not google account, takes like a minute) and then only watch jp content which will immediately only prompt japanese videos(this is the method I’ve done for japanese, for english I did the first and it was like a decade ago but it still works). Btw I forgot to add how titkok made 3 million people or 30% of voters in my country vote for a pro russian neonazi and communism nostalgic who no one who doesn’t consume endless tiktok brainrot even knew of including those who do opinion polls who ranked him extremely low. I don’t like iOS for various reasons, but the privacy it offers is excellent, and I wish Android had the same level of privacy, although that’s only possible with custom ROMs. However, this method still has its owns advantages. I just wanted to ask, does using a Japanese VPN on iOS instantly get you the Japanese For You page on TikTok? I’m asking because I have a friend who’s also on a language-learning journey, and if it’s that easy on iOS, I’ll tell him right away.
So, it’s confirmed then—on iPhone, it’s easier to get the Japanese For You page since TikTok can’t collect as much data about you as it does on Android. This was an Android guide anyway, so I’m glad that iPhone users can achieve their Japanese For You page even more easily. The reason this method wouldn’t work on Android is that TikTok checks your Google account location data and your phone’s SIM card country, forcing you into region-specific content. As a result, it would be much harder to consistently get Japanese content to appear.

Yeah, the Shorts method works, but YouTube doesn’t have an algorithm as effective as TikTok’s. I get that you’re cautious about personal data, which is great, but in this case, it doesn’t really matter—it’s running inside a VM in a sandboxed environment. There’s no data about you unless you actively provide it.
And yes, you can absolutely learn just by using YouTube. I completely agree and use that method myself because I think it’s really powerful. However, this post is aimed at people who want to make their TikTok addiction more productive rather than just doomscrolling without any real benefit.
As for data collection, I personally don’t care whether it’s China or the U.S.—both collect data, yet people only seem to make a fuss when it’s China. I understand your concerns, but I think you get my point now.

Make sure you’re starting with a fresh account, and make sure you’re marking English posts as “not interested”. It needs both negative and positive reinforcement. Only took me about 5 minutes to build a Japanese feed from America.
Edit: You also have to seed it by searching up Japanese posts and liking them first.
i refuse to use tiktok anymore for political reasons after the changes they implemented to placate the US right wing, so i can’t say.
but if you refuse to give them location permission i don’t see what else they could use to figure out your location other than your apparent IP location.
nah works on android cause I did the same thing , if u just make a effort to like comment watch search content your recommended videos will change to Japanese content, and press not interested in English videos.
oh yeah, I don’t care a lot about data collection either, it’s unavoidable, but china is so hardcore about it, just look at how riot’s using the entirety of the efi partition that’s used for boot for “cache” for their “anti cheat” that’s really a root kit that can at any moment take control of your entire computer which is a vulnerability that can be exploited by malicious individuals not necessarily china. anyways as I said this is just half the reason I don’t use it, the other is brain rot, shitty content, whatever you want to call it, it’s filled with ai bullshit or stuff that just lacks creativity and is there just to grab your attention, sometimes there’s also extremely disgusting shit I never want to see in my life. I’d rather search for specific subjects and hope to find some good videos on youtube in the cesspool of small mediocre influencer wannabes(which is not something I’m encountering on the japanese youtube side with the content I am currently looking up(photography)) then scroll through everything listed above.
