Free vpn for nz

i’m leaving bz for 2mths and i want to keep watching tvnz+ outside of nz, in singapore, any free vpns i can use in singapore to connect to nz servers ?

Recommend against free VPNs, or at least being VERY careful with them (eg don’t use on a device that has anything on it you’d worry about being made public or losing). VPNs cost money to run, so unless you’re paying money for it you are generally losing privacy or security in the process.

If you’ve got access to someone who doesn’t mind having an extra computer running at their house then tailscale is pretty easy to set up. I’ve got an exit node running in a family member’s living room which I use to do stuff that requires an NZ IP. It’s almost free (box of beer every now and again). Requires a bit of technical knowledge, but not a great deal.

Tvnz very strict. Plus you must always set your device to nz time

Afraid you’re SOL. Some good VPNs have free tiers but usually limited servers and never in NZ.

so unless you’re paying money for it you are generally losing privacy or security in the process.

Money is not a safeguard for security or privacy with anything and people need to stop acting like it is. The free products are guaranteed to be shady, yes, but the paid products are not guaranteed to be better by default. “If the product is free, you’re the product” is a bad motto and it shields premium products when they don’t deserve it.

I use WireGuard because it’s easy to set up on router (or at least is easy on Asus routers)

crap, i guess i have to wait till i’m done then

Well said and agreed. But, “if the product is free, you’re the product” still stands.

No it doesn’t (And my beef is with the saying, not you). A better saying is “You’re always the product”.

The implication of “if the product is free, you’re the product” is that it doesn’t hold true for paid services. It functions, explicitly as a shield for premium services. And it also kind of blames people for being too poor to pay the piper. It shifts the blame/responsibility away from the monied, and excuses corporate sliminess. (“Well of course they have to be slimeballs, you’re not ponying up. The fault is with you! The money’s gotta come from somewhere!”).

The problem is we live in a capitalist society where companies don’t want to just make some of the money, they want to make all of the money. What goes for free services, thus also goes for paid ones. If it makes money, it is a valid business model. They happen to also take a cut of your own money at the same time. I hate the phrase because it takes air out of just how bad the problem actually is and relegates it simply to the realm of free services, while also justifying their behaviour and putting the blame on the end user. It feels like a slick piece of corporate propaganda that passes well enough for actual wisdom if you don’t walk it through logically.

So got any suggestions for a free vpn?
