ExpressVPN blocking Apple app compatibility since update

So I can force sync on both devices and then they update to my current messages but I still can’t sent or receive new messages without force syncing. I really hope there’s a patch for this soon because it’s seriously cramping my workflow as I’m sure it is many others as well.

This never used to be an issue before - been using Messages on my Mac for years with the VPN enabled. Something tells me with was caused by a MacOS update. I hope ExpressVPN can deliver a patch.

3 days later and no resolution in sight. The tech support suggested I change to the IKEv2 protocol and that did allow texts to go through. I found, though that this protocol is pretty flaky and as a result my internet speeds swung drastically all day when I was using it – from zero to full speed. I replied that it did work but do not consider it a solution. The tech replied by asking me to try all of the protocols and let them know how they work. My reply was that I did not know they had hired me to do their QA. No reply since. It seems that their employees are not allowed to use Macs, as there seems to be no awareness or interest whatever at expressvpn about macs.

SIKE! Did not fix iPhone Mirroring which still, somehow, does not work. Messages is sporadically operational.

This unfortunately didn’t do anything for me… Still having the issue. Very annoying.

This update resolved it for me!

Running Sequoia 15.0.1
Updated Express VPN to 11.61.1

In Express VPN, went to Preference > General and then checked the option at the bottom to allow Apple Services to bypass the VPN.

Not true. I’m in the US. VPN running on my 15 Pro max is irrelevant, but when VPN is on my M1 15" MBP, all iCloud functions broken. No messages, no syncing to iCloud, no Photo updates.

iPhone VPN on / MBP VPN on - no mirroring
iPhone VPN on / MBP VPN off - mirroring

Edit: This does not seem to be isolated to ExpressVPN, as others are reporting it as well.

Preferences - Protocol. One caveat is that you have to turn off the “advanced protection” when using any protocol other than automatic or Lightway.

Got a reply from expressvpn. their solution is to have me turn off Network Protection. They claim I am still connected to the vpn and therefore “safe”. Anyone an actual expert on that question? I have always assumed that when expressvpn drops off and reconnects itself, that i am exposed for those few seconds, to anyone snooping for my real identity and therefore defeating the purpose of using a vpn in the first place.

Ugh. Thanks for letting me know

Hey all finally an update. With what appears to be Mac version 61.1, there is a checkbox option to allow Apple services to bypass VPN and work.

Kind of a bizarre workaround for a security app but at least it’s something.
