ExpressVPN Aircove Review

Last year, ExpressVPN launched the Aircove, one of the first Wi-Fi 6 routers with built-in VPN functionality. The router makes it easy to manage VPN connections and control which devices use the VPN.

The Aircove launched globally this year, including in the UK for around £230. ExpressVPN is offering a 25% Black Friday discount on the router.

The Aircove is a Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) router with speeds up to 1.2Gbps on the 5GHz band. It has a 1.2GHz quad-core CPU, 512MB RAM, and 128MB storage. Security features include built-in ExpressVPN, threat protection, parental controls, and ad blocking.

The web-based UI makes it easy to manage VPN connections, create device groupings, and configure settings. Users can connect to 8 VPN locations simultaneously.

With the VPN active, the router provides speeds around 120-250Mbps depending on location, with the fastest speeds achieved using IKEv2 protocol. The ad blocking was only partially effective in testing.

At £230 in the UK, the Aircove is overpriced compared to alternatives like flashing DD-WRT on a router. It’s best for those wanting easy VPN management, but with compromised router performance.

For me it doesn’t work, since even that they say in marketing material that works with hotel type wifi that require portal authentication, it really doesn’t work. This is critical, so the main reason to have this device is the ability to travel and have VPN, secure and stable internet access, but it doesn’t support the most common wifi access in that scenario which is the common hotel wifi that has no password and require a portal authentication

Garbage product and a garbage service. Don’t waste your money on either.
