Can I use my PC to run VPN router, so that I can connect my wired LAN TV to the VPN service? The computer should not be using the VPN.
You can setup a VPN gateway on a Raspberry Pi and point your devices to its IP address or you can just do the same thing in a virtual machine.
Yes, you can. Since your PC is the server, it won’t have a VPN connection itself to route out through.
Your PC and TV on the same network?
Sure. But, I prefer to avoid additional hw or the overhead/diskspace of a VM.
I run a Pi-Hole WireGuard VPN Gateway on a bare bones Debian with 1 CPU and 512mb of RAM and it works a dream. Works perfect fir my TV and Xbix. Not sure how to achieve the same on Windows though.
You’ll need multiple outbound network interfaces: one for traffic originating from the PC, one for forwarded traffic from your TV. You need to start the VPN client on the PC but bind the VPN connection to the latter. Then you need to set up routing rules to separate the traffic from PC and the TV.
If not impossible, this is very hard to do on a Windows PC.
Ok, thanks for the suggestion.
I was hoping it would be possible to set up an independent vpn gateway on a different subnet, that could exist on the same lan. Then I could point the TV set to that, instead of the isp router.
Only the VPN subscription. Debian is free, VirtualBox is free and most setup guides are just copy and paste scripts.
If you are trying to do this on a PC or other standalone device, it would be easier to do on a Linux system than on Windows.
But if you are in the market for a router, please take a look at ours: https://www.pcwrt.com. You can create two networks (with either VLAN or wireless SSIDs), and configure one network to go through the VPN but the other remain on the ISP.
…and about 50 kw/h a month?
