Betternet support won’t respond to issues unless you pay for premium
If you’re looking for a good (paid, but cheap) VPN, I’ve been using SurfShark. It’s like $2/mo and it’s actually really fast. The drawback is it’s smaller company, so they don’t have as many servers as some of the bigger ones out there, but it is cheap and works great
Not providing things for free is not asshole design.
If you are data conscience, why are you even using a free VPN? Using a free VPN is worse than not having a VPN at all. You dont know what these free VPN companies can mine up about you, which i can guarantee, is more data being mined by companies on top of what companies would have mined if you havent used a free VPN in the first place.
I recommend getting a reliable, paid VPN at least. But hey, if you are just using it to get around the school wifi restrictions, or if it is the only one that would work with it, like you said you are, then have at it. If you wish to continue to use Betternet’s free service, then more power to you, just be aware of the possible data they may collect though.
This isn’t asshole design. It isn’t a design issue. A designer didn’t do this
I purchased annual Betternet subscription from their website, and was charged, but I could not find the subscription cancel or renewal settings since it wasn’t from the Google Play store. A few minutes later, I got an offer to join Betternet at a discounted price via the Google Play store, so I purchased it there. Now I have two subscriptions, but I don’t know how to cancel the one purchased from the website as there is no subscription info on it anywhere. I have been trying to get to Betternet support to no avail. I may be forced to dispute one of the charges with my credit card company if I don’t get resolution. Any suggestions on how to cancel the web based subscription?
They are not saying they won’t fix it, they are saying they won’t tell you that they have fixed it and if it is user error (most tech faults are) they won’t tell you how to fix it.
Most large free services won’t give you personal support.
I only use betternet because it’s the only vpn that works on my school wifi
It is when it’s customer service. Because making customer service a revenue stream disincentivizes keeping your service running smoothly.
everything’s designed by someone

Customer service isn’t design though.
So you think they should provide a FREE VPN and FREE customer service. They will not be in business for long.
True, but in this case it’s more like asshole customer service policy than design. Mind you that’s just my opinion and you know what they say about opinions…
Not UI or software design, but it is part of the company’s corporate structure, which is as much a design as a piece of code is.
The premium service should be better, but not exclusive. Put premium customers to the head of the list. But if customer service being the revenue stream is as bad for premium customers as it is for free customers, because it means that they have a monetary incentive to provide generally shit service.
