Best Router for Proton VPN (Verizon Fios Gigabit Customer)

Hello… I am looking to get a router to set it up with Proton VPN to encrypt my internet traffic at home…

My ISP is Verizon Fios

Any Suggestions??

grab an i5 4th or 6th gen pc and two nics in it then install OpnSense on it

A couple things to be aware of regarding Asus home routers:

  • Both the stock firmware as well as the Merlin firmware have a built-in VPN client capability which makes it easy to install / manage ProtonVPN on the router. It includes things like a kill switch, split tunneling, etc.
  • However, to the best of my knowledge both firmware options are limited to OpenVPN; they currently do not support the Wireguard protocol. This can be problematic in terms of upload/download speeds as OpenVPN is single-threaded.

I’ve read some forums (mostly here) that mention the stock Asus firmware will soon support Wireguard, but it will be limited to either wifi 6 (802.11ax) or wifi 6E models.

I’ve had an RT-AC68U for several year. In my opinion you can’t go wrong. I’ve moved into a larger home. I plan on getting two more and doing a mesh network.

According to an email that I received from ASUS support. WireGuard will be implemented in the second quarter of this year, onn AX routers. But he didn’t know what models.

Exactly, that’s what I did. I have had also an old RT-AC66U, so after updating to a better one (AX), I did a Mesh network and the old (AC) running as a node. I couldn’t be happier.

Where do I find the beta that includes Wireguard? The one on the ASUS website doesn’t list it.

If you have a AX model, go to the router page in Asus, then support, Bios & Firmware, Expand all, and there you can search in yellow letters the Beta.

I have an XT8. The only one I see is this one.
Is it this one that has WireGuard enabled ?

Honestly I don’t have your Asus model to give a try, and yes, you have to manually install it, it’s an easy procedure just follow the manual.

I have done it several times (going from Alfa to Beta and vice versa) and never had an issue. You can always go back to the previous version if you don’t like it or isn’t working.

Have you installed this beta and does it have WireGuard on your router?

Yes, and just confirmed that XT8 has WireGuard also in Beta.

I tried the Beta (just curious), but went back to Asus Merlin.
