Second this. I let my toddler watches Bluey in Cantonese. She picks up mama, baba, and some other words that I say to her.
Hmmmm, interesting. I just thought it’s cute, but you do have a point. I will definitely keep this in mind, and start emphasising the chinese side of them
this is an interesting approach, I will definitely try this. I wish there is some easier way, like proper full on 24/7 cantonese cartoon programme. Like what you get with cartoon network in english or spanish
hahahaha, what you mean? TVB streaming?
The speaking thing is so hard and one reason is that so many of the Cantonese speakers my daughters interact with, in HK and elsewhere, also speak English. So they are rarely in the position where they MUST speak Canto or else not be able to communicate. You can encourage them, you can try to force them, you can pretend you don’t understand, but it’s fake and kids know it. Nothing beats needing to speak Cantonese to be understood at all.
By contrast I have a friend who speaks to his kids in Mandarin, but in his case a) his parents are around and don’t speak English - so the kids have to speak Mandarin with them and b) every time they go to China it’s like throwing them in the deep end.
My in laws speak fluent English, and when I put my daughters in art/sports/whatever classes during extended stays in HK she speaks English with them and they understand her and that’s that. I need to drop them off in Tuen Mun or something…
And when they’re older, Ducktales!
Can you drop some of the ones on netflix? Because I’ve been looking and the ones I like sometimes don’t even have mandarin options on them.
is it possible to live stream all the way to Europe? Because I’ve heard that it is quite laggy if you’re streaming this unblock tech from outside of Asia. I assume you have experience with this, so how is it outside of Asia?
If you have Disney plus you can just make it Cantonese.
Yea, it’s extremely easy to find in Cantonese with a Disney plus subscription.
There is very sad world of half-chinese kids growing up to hate their chinese side because of how they were treated growing, from both their chinese-side of their family and the broader non-chinese society they grew up in. See r/hapas.
Personally, I’m going to emphasize they are “both” rather than “half”. Subtle but hopefully gives they more pride in their identities.
I think you get the point. You have to search in the same language you wanted your results to be and adding the specific language at the end or somewhere.
Good luck.
