6% of the US population are GitHub users

Just looked up the user numbers for GitHub, says over 20 million users are in the US alone. Total US pop. is 333 million. Is this right? Is the population segment that engages with software development to some capacity in the states really this high?

I will say, you aren’t taking into account people with multiple accounts. Work, school, and personal accounts kept separate and some may even have multiple accounts of those types.

20 million US users sound a bit high since it would mean 15-20% of their users are from the US (based on the fact GitHub had 100 million total in 2023). What is your source?

User count also doesn’t take into account that a single person can have multiple users.

Some have multiple accounts, but many people also create accounts so they can file issues/discussion only.

I have multiple accounts so bogus metric.

Finally I am in the top 10% of something… or bottom 10% depending on how you look at it

I could imagine one percent. No matter what number GitHub reports, it would have to be inflated due multiple accounts, malicious and bot accounts etc.

If this were even close to true it would be amazing considering its steep learning curve and the fact that you never need an account to dl things from it.

Nah. I’ve got probably 10 accounts from different companies and academics over the years. Most of them are surely still around at the org/enterprise level even if they aren’t active. The vast, vast majority of that number is going to be zombie accounts. A helpful statistic would be number of active monthly users or something to that effect.

Not unrealistic, consider some countries network is enclaved within a Great Firewall, they usually have they’re own internal Git web interface ala Github (I think for China it’s Gittea) so make sense most GH users are from Europe, South America and Northen one

Like seriously, does even one software developer out there exist that does not have at least 2 accounts? Like who would ever use his private GitHub in a corporate job?

Is it less or more?

Which country has the highest numbers of people engaged in IT ?

How many of those users actually actively use github?

Git out of here. That’s crazy.

5.9% of us just want to download the binary!

well a lot of accounts likely 90% are inactive with inactive repositories. Of those that you mentioned likely only 1% would be active accounts with active repositories that are being maintained and even lesser than that which are actually released and in production

I have six GitHub accounts

I have 2 github accounts (one for my personal usage and the other one for my public FOSS projects).

I have two or three accounts.

I tend to make a set of gmail, appleID, and GitHub for any job I start. I’m sure I’m not the only one.

I have 4 accounts… one of them has nothing to do with software development…so, there are a lot of variables that need to be accounted for here.
