Youtube Premium is tracking you

I’ve been locked out of my premium family account for the second time now. Their new policy is that every member has to physically be in the same location as the manager. We all live together so I was confused. Went to support who told me that they send out location checks “randomly every 30 days or so”. Or so? Who believes that crap? They’re tracking you constantly. Support told me that they track your IP. That means they can check your location whenever without having to notify you or ask your permission. So when these checks come in randomly and the manager is at work, they will flag that you’re at a different IP and lock you out of a service you paid $21.99 plus tax for. They also check your IP on Google as well, not just YouTube. So if you’re traveling you’ll also be flagged and locked out. This is invasion of privacy and a scam. Fuck YouTube and FUCK Google. Greedy to no end.

Literally every app installed on your phone uses your current ip address to determine ip-based location for providing their services to you ( mostly ads though )

Sometimes, when you have provided permission for GPS, these same apps know exactly where you are.

Read the terms and conditions of every app!

Send YouTube Premium a support email telling them their technology has been wrong on this occasion - maybe a family member used a vpn, or was on holiday… though if you are breaking the terms and conditions, then we’ll forgive you for stating the obvious.

This might be region based but this is what I can see on the YouTube family on Google right now So there is no requirement to be in the same household/ have the same location

If they lock me out, congrats! They’ve just lost a paying customer. Went from some money to none

In my case, I’m the Manager of the family, so Whenever I change location (to Pay cheaper YouTube Premium), my family changes too…

This is why it’s important not to give them access.

Did you change country or something? I have a family plan in the US, family members are in both east and west cost, as well as mid-west. No issue for years. We never change location/countries.

Aww…it’s so cute when they finally open up and read the terms of service! You finally know now what we have been preaching about for the last 15+ years!

You should now go look and see how many apps you have on your phone that record your contact list and messages(spoiler alert: it is most, if not all of them!)

You are free to defend corporate greed just like how I’m free to complain about it. My point was they’re tracking you every month to make it inconvenient to have a family plan. Support literally encouraged me to get my own plan because this has happened to me twice. If one month I’m traveling a lot for example, I have to get my own plan? It’s the greediness.

No problems here with turkey account and Dutch family members

Support told me twice I have to physically be in the same location as the family manager. I didn’t check the terms of service but I did get locked out twice and they told me because location. I would have included screenshots but I don’t know how. Hopefully it doesn’t happen to you because it’s very inconvenient. I’ve use YouTube music a long time, it didn’t use to be like this I don’t think…

Same, one family member on the west coast and rest in MS. No problem at all except the price!

When they do the random location checks and one of us is traveling that’s when I get locked out. It just seems excessive to buy an individual subscription for a little trip. It’s happened on international and domestic travels. And traveling is when I need my music the most so I just think this is a very greed leaning term of service.

The point isn’t just that they are tracking you. The main point I was making is that they are greedy and they do it by tracking you, making it inconvenient for you to have a family account and pushes you to get your own account.

You’re also free to complain that you get wet when you stand outside in the rain.
And we’re free to say “no shit”

If that means we’re “defending” the rain in your eyes then so be it.

Or maybe, just maybe, everyone in the world already knew what you’re just figuring out.

Go to “Manage your google account” and then in “People & sharing” in there you should see your family group, I don’t know if you can see the same thing I was as I’m the familly manager. In there on the family group I have a “Learn More” and that’s where the picture is from

I don’t think you’re understanding the point of the post…
The point is they are greedy by setting up a family account this way. They make it inconvenient for you to use the app somewhere other than the same IP as the manager. And you pay more for less freedom of use.

What is your point exactly by coming here saying this? You’re so angry I can practically hear the steam coming out your ears. Relax. It’s a discussion forum and I posted something I learned. Congrats for knowing it before me. Does that make you feel better?

Idk what to tell you. Support said I have to be living in the same house, not just country. That’s why I think it’s so ridiculous I had to post. I wish it was that lenient. It seems only I am having this problem but that’s what they told me. I’ve had YouTube premium for years and this only started happening this year. For now, when I call and tell them we all live together they fix it. I fear eventually they will tell me that I “travel” too much and must have my own account.

Why would you (incorrectly) presume I’m angry? If it’s my tone, I literally mirrored your tone.

If you had chosen to not strawman me as angry I would happily engage in a respectful exchange of different opinions, but you presumed anger because I talked just like you.

So I have no interest in explaining why I think you’re wrong.

Tis a shame too because you started out with legitimate and valid points.

Maybe next time don’t openly accuse a stranger (especially one who uses the same tone and phrases you choose to use) is angry. It makes you look like a pretentious moron.

You could have called me out for being condescending. Because I absolutely and obviously was. Dismissively so. But “angry” is where you went which is laughably wrong.

I don’t get angry at immature morons, thanks. I have to care about you to be angry. My only emotion was mirth.

Better luck next time.
