With VPN enabled--NONE of my streaming services will connect?

Just got a GL-MT6000 up and running–in part because I have more than 5 devices I wanted to connect via my Mullvad VPN account. A reddit search uncovered this sub and mentioned that these routers would be a nifty solution to that…

But I have an nVidia Shield running several apps (PBS, Tubi, Smarttube, etc, etc) and NONE of them are able to connect when the VPN is enabled. (Didn’t have that problem running the Mullvad app on the Shield.) As soon as I toggle off the VPN setting, everything is fine.

New to the GL.iNet, so I’m wondering if there’s something I’ve overlooked, or a setting I haven’t encountered yet, etc…

[edit] Interesting that its fine if I connect via Wi-Fi from the nVidia–there’s something about the ethernet connection it doesn’t like…

[2nd edit] It’s now working properly, and I think those of you that suggested trying a different server were probably correct. I have several to choose from and I believe I happened to try one that worked. Next, I’ll have to roll up my sleeves, and investigate this “roll-your own” option.

There are companies that sell a current list of commercial VPN IP’s. The streaming companies use these services to block VPN’s.

The only solution is to roll your own vpn

If you have verified connectivity, it could simply be the specific VPN server you are using. Commercial VPNs are notorious for being blocked by streaming services, often some servers work, some don’t.

It will be better if you host your own VPN instead. Also cheaper (free!). There are instructions to do this on GL.iNet documentation website. It’s called a WireGuard server.

I asked this in another post and got downvoted but will ask again here.

Why do you want all your devices routing through a vpn in the first place?

Test to change the IP/Country your using on the router.

100%. I have a small vpn service. If you want to get around commercial/national TV region blocks you’ll need to vpn back to a residential IP address. IP’s blocks not associated to commercial enterprise are HARD to obtain.

Why would everything work via the Mullvad app, but not via the router-level version?

I’ll have to look into that. I’ve never had a router that would support that option before! :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I don’t have a definitive answer–but in my case, if you want to have more than 5 devices connected at a time (with the current VPN provider I’m using) this is one solution.

Are you 100% sure that you are connecting to the exact same server on the router as you are on the app?

Welcome to the GL.iNet family

But why do you want all your devices going through a VPN is the question. Why is that better in your case than not going through a VPN tunnel.

No, I’m not to be honest. But now I’ve encountered and issue where all is well when I’m connected to the router via wi-fi, but NOT via ethernet.
