I am asking this in both subs. I would like to know why you are using one over the other and why. I want to see what reasons apply to me and I’ll be able to choose the one that suits my needs. From research, I came to the conclusion these two are the best VPN’s on the market right now.
Proton best all rounder:+1:
I have personally never heard of Windscribe.
I’ve used both, so I’ll take the bait.
Both Windscribe and Proton VPN are open source, so the client software is trustworthy. They both use open source protocols - so that’s good too. They’ve both been around for several years - Windscribe since 2016 and Proton VPN since 2017.
Both Windscribe and Proton VPN have a no-log policy. But so do a bunch of other companies that everyone knows DO log, so that’s not worth much without proof. Proton VPN has subjected their no-logs policy to an independent audit, and published the results. Windscribe has been around for longer but has not done so yet, which is odd.
The free version of Proton VPN allows unlimited usage forever. The free version of Windscribe is capped at 10GB. On wifi I’d go through about 50GB a week just browsing on my phone, so that basically makes Windscribe a 7 day trial. That Windscribe was able to track how much usage I have had across multiple sessions and different devices smelled a bit like logging to me
Windscribe is based in Canada, part of the 5-Eyes data sharing alliance. Proton VPN is in Switzerland, which doesn’t have mandatory data sharing requirements. Windscribe claims that isn’t an issue anyway since they don’t log, but have declined to prove it.
Protection from overreach by law enforcement isn’t part of my risk model. But protection from technology providers is. Laws on the European continent do a better job of protecting consumers from rogue companies than those in North America.
So for a range of reasons, Windscribe didn’t inspire me with much confidence. Mullvad did, but didn’t have all the features that I needed. Proton ticked all the boxes that the others didn’t. So here I am.
Windscribe is full of shit, disconnects whenever it feels like it, servers are slow and so on. Proton on the other hand is more stable, reliable and fast.
Depends on your needs but like Millenial_Gentleman said, proton is quite stable. My qBittorrent rig has maintained the same connection for over 2 weeks now. My main pc around the same time, and I never really get random disconnects. Proton is stable, fast and you can get their suite of other apps proton pass and proton mail are amazing with their own features
Never heard of Windscribe.
I use Windscribe. One nice thing: it has an ad-blocker built-in.
But I think it’s gotten a little slow recently, at least the Madrid server. And Wireguard through same server was unreliable for me; I use OpenVPN.
Have used both and I found windscribe to be slower than Proton
I’ve used both, but I’ve used Proton VPN for much longer, so I’m more familiar with it. For lack of a better description, I chose Proton VPN because it just “feels” better to me; probably because I’m used to it. I also wanted to support the company and have access to their full suite of apps, although in reality I typically only ever use the VPN service.
well, i tried the free tier on both versions, i like windscribe speed, it’s more faster than proton and it allows p2p on the free tier, which is my main use, the location options are better for me, i like windscribe pc app, it’s faster and consistent, the only thing that sucks is the 10gb cap for free tier.
proton has no data cap, but it is slower and has limited features for me. the pc app is slow for me idk why. proton paid version however is cheaper than windscribe. i might try proton paid this month, and windscribe next month.
Windscribe pro is a very good VPN, rcommended!
You will obviously only get biased answers here.
Both are great vpn, generally windscribe is cheaper and runs very well.
Proton without a blink
It is a reputable VPN, somewhat newer than Proton I believe. If you’ve heard of the DNS service ControlD, Windscribe is their sister service.
I’d place Windscribe in the top 5 (Along with Proton, Mullvad, IVPN, and AirVPN)
It’s a Canadian based vpn, very good just like proton.
Damn brother u need more recognition
HOw about the other known ones for example surf shark nord express ghost etc
You’ve helped me make my choice
Are you talking about when they are both on free plans or premium?
