Why is Hotspotshield the only VPN that I can connect to (Mobile, Android VPNs)?

VPN novice here!

While using the Wi-fi at work I have tried every single “free” VPN that I can find in the Play Store with no success. They all just try to connect but never actually connect. Hotspotshield is the ONLY free VPN I can connect to and it does it in a matter of seconds (as it should be with all VPNs?) but after hitting the daily limit…well I want to switch to a different one.

The wifi here is very secure, how does hotspotshield get through? Any others I can try with the same success?

Just buy a VPN. If its free then more likely the not you are the product.

Just a little sidenote here - Hotspot Shield does not actually hide your IP properly. Try checking your connection with ip-check.info

When I tried the product, it showed the Hotspot Shield IP, and then my actual IP as somehow deduced via Javascript.

Still it doesn’t explain why Hotspotshield works as they are also doing a free version like all the others.

Here are some guesses:

  • Port you are connecting to with hotspotshield is not blocked (ex: 443) while other free ones use 1134 etc and is likely blocked.
  • Your work wifi is able to detect a vpn tunnel connection attempt (ex: openvpn) and blocks it [I have no idea if this can be done], maybe hotspotshield is using a special connection type.
  • maybe your work wifi has a block on IP’s that the free vpns use

I am not a network tech but that may lead you in the right direction.

Sysadmin here w/ free public wifi. I block the shit out of other ports.
