Without the VPN , I get roughly 500/500 Mbps. Running wireguard, I get high 400 over 90-120 Mbps.
I’ve tried a handful of servers and they all seem to fall in that range. I’ve tried the browser extension and running it on an Openwrt router.
Why are upload speeds a fraction of the download? Is there a better US server or am I stuck with these upload speeds?

Which cpu? Router?
If its router… its to be expected even high end expensive ones slow heavily down with vpn traffic even with wireguard.

Your speeds can depend on many things, including ISP, but try to switch protocols and see if that helps. Also, you can just try changing DNS settings on your device.

It runs on the Prodesk and I’m using wireguard.
The Prodesk runs as a firewall/router/vpn and is connected to an Asus RT-AX58U to handle the DHCP and wifi. I tried running surfshark wireguard on the RT-AX58U, but it ran even slower.
Your router Asus AX58U is not hardware acceleration enabled thats why speeds are slower. With OpenVPN, on AX58U you can expect about 70-100 Mbps whereas with wireguard I guess maximum you can achieve is 250 Mbps.
If you looking for maximum throughput Asus AX86U is your best bet for price, you will not regret your extra money spend. AX86U can hit anywhere from 550-600 Mbps on wireguard.
