I already got the VPN covered. I just have trouble paying for the subscription. I’ve looked through several methods.
US Paypal account: I’ve heard that if they find out that I’m Canadian, they’ll shut down my account. That sounds risky. I’ll also need to find a US Billing address to create such an account.
Gift Cards: This can be risky, as some of them won’t work. I’m also not sure if I can take advantage of the Black Friday deal with the coupons.
Virtual Credit Card that has US Billing Address: This is the most reliable but can be pricey as they have a one-time fee and a monthly fee on top of that. I may end up paying more for the virtual credit card than for the Hulu subscription. I wonder if I permanently lose access to money I deposited to the virtual wallet if I decide to stop paying the monthly fee when I don’t need to use the card. Here are some of these virtual credit cards.
US Unlocked: One Time Fee: $11.50, Monthly Fee: $3.50, Transaction Fee: $0.50, Load Fee: $3.50 + 3%
StatesCard: One Time Fee: $14.99, Monthly Fee: $3.95, No Transaction Fee, Load Fee: $0.30 + 7%
US Bank Account: This can only work for people with American citizenship. Lucky for me, I have one. I’ll need to travel to America, in order to do that. I’m not in the mood for that for now.
So far, I’m undecided on what to do to get subscribed to Hulu.
Went to target in the states and got myself a couple of $100 gift cards. Should last me a couple years on the ads tier. Just so you know tho, a lot of the Hulu content is now on Disney+ under the star banner. Check there before going through the trouble.
I just buy Hulu gift cards from here. It’s been working so far. https://www.mygiftcardsupply.com/itunes-in-canada/
US Bank Account is probably the cheapest option. You don’t need to be a US citizen or even travel to the US to sign up (in most cases). I’d suggest starting with Canadian banks that also have retail operations in the US (TD Bank, CIBC Bank USA, BMO Harris Bank, RBC Bank) as they are usually most willing to help Canadians open accounts. It helps (but isn’t required) to have an account with their Canadian side.
BMO Harris Bank has an account that doesn’t charge any fees.
TD Bank requires a $100 minimum balance to avoid fees.
Why not just use Crave? Doesn’t it have basically the same content and no advertising?!
I’m not sure why but my Canadian Amex works fine.
However you don’t need to be a US citizen to get a US credit card.
RBC, TD and BMO all have proper US based accounts, where you can get an actual US credit card.
Not just US dollar, but for example with BMO you can open an account with BMO Harris in the US.
I’ve been using StatesCard for HBO and Hulu for a while. Works well and no hassle.
I been using Hulu plus live for years I use my RBC bank US account to pay for it. And PureVPN to connect works seamlessly on Apple TV. iIts the price for it that is getting pricey it costs 86 for the Hulu with Live TV bundled with Disney and ESPN. It comes to roughly 120 Canadian which is very expensive monthly but you do get a lot of content and three services in one payment.
I’ve had Hulu (on demand - commercial free plan) on and off for 10+ years now.
I’ve paid for it in a variety of ways. Canadian credit card, US pre paid credit cards, PayPal, iTunes and Hulu gift cards.
I already got the VPN covered
Nope you don’t need a VPN, never ever used a VPN to access Hulu. DNS service works fine. As you don’t indicate what device(s) you want to use it on… either way no need for a VPN.
US Paypal account: I’ve heard that if they find out that I’m Canadian, they’ll shut down my account. That sounds risky. I’ll also need to find a US Billing address to create such an account.
I use to pay for mine in the early years with a US PayPal account. It wasn’t Hulu that shut me down but rather PayPal asking for a US address / bank account or a social security number. They are pretty serious about tax evasion using PayPal. Hulu doesn’t care where you are.
Coupons: This can be risky, as some of them won’t work. I’m also not sure if I can take advantage of the Black Friday deal with the coupons.
I think you mean gift cards. Hulu doesn’t support iTunes billing anymore so this is the way I do it for the last few years. Just add a Hulu gift card to my account about once a year. I call up a family member who lives in the US ask them to buy and text me a new card then I send them an e-transfer. This is the cheapest and most anonymous way to pay for Hulu.
You can’t take advantage of certain deals using gift cards, but you can take advantage of some. As an example I recently added Disney+ to my Hulu account for only $2.99 US more a month.
Virtual Credit Card that has US Billing Address
I did this early on but virtual cards are unreliable and at anytime Hulu could just stop accepting them. Personally I find this method so over complicated and dumb with all the added fees.
US Bank Account
I mean you can try it, but now I believe many of the streaming services back end payment systems verify that you have a US address as well. In any case just another overcomplicated method.
I use unlocator + iTunes US account, it works perfectly with zero issues. I’ve been doing it for over a year and account never shut down, and it never complains about location
I haven’t been subscribed to Hulu for a few years, but when I was I created a US Paypal account and kept trying living my credit cards until it accepted one with a fake postal code.
Every Black Friday Hulu goes on sale for $1.99 (USD) a month for new/returning subscribers for the first year. We’ve been rotating email addresses for years now. Last Black Friday it was 99 cents a month for the first year.
It’s been a few years since I had Hulu but I used to just buy gift cards from www.mygiftcardsupply.com
I don’t have Hulu anymore but back when I did - I paid by Hulu gift cards. You can buy them online and they email you the number to anywhere in the world.
I thought you could open a US account with a currency card like Wise and call it a day? I may be way wrong tho
Best way to subscribe is through a US based Apple ID. I recommend buying the Apple gift cards on Walmart’s American online store. They never had an issue with accepting Canadian PayPal. I stopped subscribing to Hulu once the Disney+ Star section started to add more content. If it weren’t for that, I’d subscribe back to Hulu in a heartbeat!
I added a US address to my Amex billing info and that worked for a different service that required a US address.
Will I be able to take advantage of the Black Friday deal with any of those coupons?
I’ve used the same method for the past three years; before that, AMEX gift cards worked, but I can’t find them anymore.
