VPN when visiting China

I was told by a friend that he recommends me using a VPN when visiting China. Is this needed? If so, why?? Anyone have any good recommendations for a decent one? Heading there in November.

You need either vpn or foreign roaming if you want to be able to access most outside websites - I bought an eSIM before my last visit and used it as a hotspot

If you’re going for longer definitely look into a VPN but be aware that any recommendations change regularly as they „stop working“ (get blocked)

Without VPN, you will literally become ‘off the grid’ to your family and friends back home, as no international social medias (Snapchat, WhatsApp, Twitter, FB, Reddit etc) can be used in China due to the infamous firewall set up by CCP

I’m using LetsVPN on mobile and works pretty well.

Do you not know that Chinese internet blocks a lot of western sites such as google? Just use Let’s VPN it’s the best one

I thought it was illegal to use vpn’s. Do you not get in trouble?

Just pretend you are going camping off grid, because that is what will happen to you. VPN access in 2023 is nearly impossible.

I’d recommend looking into AstroVPN or a similar brand that focuses on censorship bypassing

They actually unblocked Snapchat lol

A lot of people (and companies) on the mainland use VPNs and no, you won’t get in any trouble. Occasionally they’ll do a wave of blocks, and the one you’re using might become non-functional, so it’s good to have a backup service ready to go, but other than that, shouldn’t be any problem.

I was literally in Beijing two weeks ago and can confirm that multiple VPNs, consumer and corporate, worked absolutely fine.

Why would you need a VPN in china, when one is provided to you for free by the Chinese government. It is designed to keep you safe from misinformation and harmful influences like YouTube, Wikipedia and most importantly…reddit!

Only 50c? I would have thought that would be with at least a buck

Wow, you sound like a good little pink…
