VPN on cellular issues

Hi, I’m looking for some help with an issue on iOS.

I’m running a weird problem where NordVPN is using an massive amount of data on cellular. In the span of 15 minutes of being on cellular (but not doing anything on my phone during that time), the app logged over 130 MB of data usage. I’m on a limited data plan, so this is blowing through the my available data usage really quickly.

I’ve tried turning the permissions off for cellular. However, when I go from Wi-Fi to cellular, the app fails to properly disconnect from the VPN, and I have no ability to access anything other than calls and texts until I reconnect to a Wi-Fi network

Does anyone know what’s causing this high data usage, and how to get Nord to properly automatically disconnect from VPN when switching from Wi-Fi to cellular?

Not sure about the data issues, but the iOS VPN settings (Settings > VPN, and not a part of Nord) toggle may be set to auto-connect/reconnect on demand, and the phone could be sensing…demand for some reason. And if you turn Nord back on within Nord itself, that iOS toggle will reenable itself all over again so you’re stuck turning things off in two places again, every time.

I hate how this works on iOS.

It’s not just your phone starting background syncs and downloads because it thinks it’s no longer on cellular?

Tried both switching background app refresh globally to WiFi only and turning low data mode on. Hit 310MB usage just walking to my car; total other app usage during that same timeframe was <2MB.

I’ll have to raise this with NordVPN support, but for now I’m just gonna have to disable Nord on cellular until my plan resets. Bit frustrating as this kinda means Nord is at least partially useless on my phone for now.

Thanks for your suggestions though

Not as far as I can tell. Downloads are set to manual and even with background sync set to WiFi only I saw spikes in data usage exceeding any reasonable amount of background sync; none of the apps I use should burn through over 300 MB of data in less than 5 minutes

I’ll try this out. Thanks!
