VPN not working in China?

Bought a Sim from Unicom in Daxing Airport, basically nothing worked, the app will try to connect to a server but no server can be connected

My expressvpn worked in China, I remember you need to use their recommended location. It’s usually Japan. Expressvpn even has a China exclusive domain just in case you were asked to remove it when you enter China so you can get it back in China.

I’ve tried in two weeks ago at Beijing Airport and expressvpn was the only one working (nord and surfshark wouldn’t connect). However, I remember I wasn’t able to connect any country, but connecting to Japan worked.

Living temporarily in China right now for a week now and can confirm it. China despises VPNs because of their political climate and current situation regarding their privacy. Only reason you’re able to see this comment now is because I’m typing it on a phone through another free VPN service app (with ads), and not through a PC since I obviously cannot download it through PC and because it’s obviously not on PC

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. That’s China for you. During certain events they also ramp up their efforts, like major holidays. I went a whole week once with the VPN not working at all. Then it was back to normal. This was back in 2019, I think they’ve generally increased the efforts a little bit due to the current political climate.

ExpressVPN has stopped working in China for quite a while. I didn’t work since last year I was there and not worked anytime I went to China this year. Switch to Astrill VPN. That’s the only one that still works. Or better if you subscribe to your home country’s data roaming services. That’s what I do nowadays. No VPN required.

Well you have people online spreading mis info about expressvpn works in China
Good I still have my company phone with international roaming so im not cut-off

The recommended location in China for me was their fastest connection, whatever the fuck that means

if it’s free and it works, the vpn is probably a honeypot vpn from china haha

Absolutely.

During my time there, there were moments the VPN will fail due to either political event or global exhibition. A couple of days after the event, all is fine again.

Seems there’s a tighter lid these days.
