Does anyone have experience configuring ProtonVPN on UDMP? I’ve set up the OpenVPN configuration for Privateinternetaccess VPN but after running it through its paces it has proven to be extremely slow for throughput (1Gb FiOS WAN connection, max 160mb down, 200 up with PIA engaged using many sites east and west). Not even close to ideal.
So I checked around and it appears that ProtonVPN is quite a bit faster (6-700mb down by all reports) and they support Ubuntu Linux with both OpenVPN and Wireguard config files, but not sure if it requires CLI knowledge to install. Or is it as simple as uploading a configuration from Proton then set up the routing profile?
TIA for any hive wisdom.
Currently using Proton VPN. Using a wireguard configuration. I normally get speed test between 300-400 down and 500-600 up. Does not require cli to install.
That sounds encouraging… so then it was just a Proton configuration file upload to install?
Getting 200 down 25 up. Granted I’m limited by my plan speeds, but hey I’m getting full speed.
Yes, you will make a few choices during your setup from protonvpn, like which server you want to connect to. You will then download the wireguard configuration file that it makes for you. Upload that configuration file to your udm, then activate the vpn. Then head over and make some policy routes. Example I dont send all my traffic out through the vpn, only selected vlans. The only thing thats kinda tiring, your users will get a lot more captchas to solve before visiting some sites.
Understandable, my internet is 2.5gig symmetrical. I dont get bent out of shape about my wireless speeds since the physical port is limited to 1gig. So, Im happy.
Right. Is your WAN post 2.5gig?
I have a server on the network that has a 10g card in it. Which does not use the proton vpn. It will usually do a speed test between 1.8gig to 2.3 gig.
I see. So you’re just limited by your port speeds.
Always limited by the physical port.
