Hi! I am getting ProtonVPN on my router so all my devices at home are channeled through VPN. I also have the ProtonVPN app installed on each of my devices (phone, laptop, iPad) to use when I’m not at home.
- Does this mean I will have to remember to manually open the ProtonVPN app on each of my devices and disconnect/reconnect VPN every time I come/leave home (which is frequent)?
- What happens if I don’t turn the VPN off on my phone while I’m at home? Will my internet traffic be routed through the VPN twice? Or will ProtonVPN automatically detect this and handle it for me?
Sorry if this question has been asked but I’ve been unable to find an answer. It it helps, the router I ordered is an InvizBox 2 preinstalled with ProtonVPN, and am using the ProtonVPN apps on iPhone, MacBook, iPad. Also I struggle with ADHD and having to remember to manually connect/disconnect on all of my devices every time I leave or come home is just not realistic.
I have a similar setup and it works OK with both enabled. I guess is vpn over vpn.
If you use the VPN on your phone I don’t think it uses the one on your router. although to be honest I’m not 100% sure
If you have ProtonVPN installed on all your devices, then there is no reason to keep Proton VPN configured on the router, as the client on your phone will be respected. If you have VPN set up on both the router and the device, your traffic will go through the VPN twice, resulting in a much slower connection. This is unnecessary and does not add to security.
If you’re using an iPhone I believe you can setup a Siri shortcut proximity trigger to disconnect the VPN when you’re in range of your home. You can also set the trigger to be certain networks. Android I believe has something similar with google assistant, but I’m not sure how it works
Sometimes I am using my phone and notice my VPN is off, who knows for how long. Probably a glitch but it turns itself off almost daily. I’d rather just VPN the whole network and not fiddle with apps.
So is that 2 hops or not really?
This would be great. I will try that. I think PIA VPN had a setting that would do something similar.
