Use Google One VPN

Is there a way to use the VPN included in Google One on a chrome os flex installation? To me it looks like that is not available.

It’s nothing directly to do with Chrome OS or Chromebooks.
It’s available to premium subscribers to Google One.
In other words, those who pay for 2TB Google Drive storage. It’s a benefit you get with that.

I’d imagine it’s accessible to flex users too. But it’s not in-your-face obvious on a regular Chromebook to start using it.

I suggest if you’ve not already got a paid Google One subscription, then get one (it’s not a binding contract and not expensive at the lowest level). Then follow the instructions that a regular Chromebook user would use.

It covers all the devices attached to your Google account (though I’ve not tried to put it on my Android TVs yet)

And it works really well with most of your network devices too. Unlike other VPNs that don’t recognise those as on your network once you’re “outside” on your VPN. Only some of the functions on my printer so I have to disable it for.
All my cameras, all non-google, it works with. And all my smart speakers etc.

So, as a Google One member, I’d been wondering about being able to use the Google One VPN on my HP Stream 14-cb130nr (NOT on the Chrome OS Flex certified device list). I contacted Google One Support and was ultimately told to download the app (from the Play Store). I took a screenshot and let them know there was no Play Store in Chrome OS Flex. I’ve been able to add my ipVanish VPN to this laptop using the OpenVPN protocol and it works fine. I am disappointed that this is not supported in Chrome OS Flex.

You would need ChromeOS, not ChromeOS Flex, for it to be able to install Android Apps. Then it’s no problem at all.

Benefits of Google One seem to hinge around their Android app. There’s no support for Android apps on Flex. So probably not.

If there is another way I’d like to hear it. I’d like to use the VPN on my router.

You get VPN with any level of Google One.

You could always try the Linux support in ChromeOS Flex.

At the time I wrote that, it was only available with the top subscriptions.
Now it is available with all paid subscriptions. I have it with my lowest 100GB level.

Google One is an Android app. And it seems to be the key to the Google One VPN.
There’s no problem manually setting up a VPN on Flex, but I’ve not seen anywhere published the One VPN log ins to do that. The One app seems to handle the user authentication. Understandably sort of.

I honestly didn’t realize your comment was 8 months ago, lol. It’s nice that they changed the policy on it.
