Alright looking for some tech support because I really dont know what to do at this point. I was a Kaspersky user and like many of you, got auto dumped on with Ultra AV. Spent a few days basically getting around it by turning it off, but it caused all sorts of issues loading programs, restarting, all of it. Well I decided I would get it Uninstalled. Got Kaspersky (which was still installed) and Ultra AV un-installed, with all their extra programs, but when I restarted, my GPU is no longer working. It’s like it completely bricked it. Tried restarting again, tried unplugging, all the normal easy things to try. The GPU still shows up in my device manager, but its not functioning. The monitor it’s attached to is not turning on and the computer says no other display monitors are detected. Any ideas?
UPDATE: got the gpu working again. But my computer is still running crazy slow. It’s like my solid state got turned into a HDD. What used to take 5 sec or so to restart now takes 5+ minutes and loading up any program takes forever.
It’s strange, some Kaspersky installs are auto replaced and some aren’t. My mother’s computer was auto replaced with Ultra AV, which I promptly uninstalled. I only noticed because I told her to bring her computer so I could install the ESET subscription I purchased. None of my computers received the auto install. Something tells me Kaspersky is going to build geopolitical directives into their future products. I doubt they expected to be targeted. If I recall correctly, Kaspersky moved their headquarters to satisfy earlier complaints and opened their codebase.
Uninstalling Kaspersky has always been a very bad idea in my experience… They seem to over write parts of windows and also some drivers - and also put things in the registry / config files etc etc.
When you remove Kaspersky – some of these things - but not all – get removed – but the original windows items are not “put back” – or the settings fixed. Big problem …
It used to be that uninstalling Kaspersky - even using their tool – meant that the computer instantly did not see the mouse any more - as well as began to do weird things to the graphics - got stuck with minimum resolution etc etc – and the only fix that worked was to completely blank slate re-install windows – and then everything else - then all the drivers…updates … took forever.
Trying to deal with a computer / navigate the screens with no mouse functionality … is not fun
Then also some apps like Office and Adobe acrobat and the internet browsers were messed up too.
Might be the simplest solution - guaranteed to work. Reinstall it all – especially if you have a pre-kaspersky image of your full hard drive ( unlikely – but you never know).
If you have DELL computer and have a Dell online account – then all the drivers and updates etc custom tailored to your particular machine will be there – otherwise – I would not know where to even start.
Good luck.
Shouldve used REVO uninstaller
My PC has been messed up since I uninstalled Kaspersky. I didn’t even know about the Ultra thing but I uninstalled it to allow access for my job and when I tried to reinstall I couldn’t download it. It was due to expire at the end of October anyway but now my iCloud email doesn’t work. I uninstalled the UltraAV (I think) but still can’t open my emails. Kaspersky is still running fine on my laptop and no problem with emails. I’m not sure if my PC has been compromised and I have no idea what to do now. I have had Kaspersky for at least 15 years with no problems and never worried about viruses protection. I have a Dell PC but I’m not sure how that works. I’m starting a new WFH job in a few weeks and I need my computer setup properly.
The same happened to me. They forcibly installed Ultra AV without my permission and left Kaspersky running, which messed everything up. I tried uninstalling Kaspersky and got error message saying the uninstaller was not working, the program could not be uninstalled, etc. I contacted Ultra AV support and they helped me get it uninstalled, but Chrome crashes after about 2 minutes every time, my computer shuts down by itself periodically. Programs freeze, hang up or just crash completely. I’ve ordered a new computer because mine was old, but still working well until Ultra AV happened, but time for a new one and Ultra AV is not going on it.
I ended up with a bunch of ~xxx directories. I figured that was just Ultra’s way of keeping track. Then my edge executable was renamed to new_edge and old_edge. That broke everything.
Uninstalled UltraAV. Renamed edge and my machine is working again. Hoping to get a refund. Fucking Ultra POS.
Easiest solution is formatting
UPDATE2: uninstalling my graphics card drivers and fresh installing them have gotten the computer back in a usable state. However the drive that was on seems to be heavily corrupted still. As long as I don’t do anything that needs that drive it runs smooth, but that drive is still a problem. Will probably format that drive alone and see if that fixes the problem.
Did your virus definition updates stall a few days ago unless you turned on a non US location in the vpn ? Seems this is what happened to at least some whose Kaspersky continues to work.
The (very) low price Amazon origin licenses seem to be among those that still work - seems they are not tied to the US – aside from in that recent update that seemed to check where the computer “appeared” to be from. I seriously doubt Kaspersky cannot immediately circumvent THEIR OWN vpn set up and know where the computer actually is - but for now thankfully they let sleeping dogs alone.
Wish I had bought a few extra licenses- I did not realize that they do not seem to expire. I do not know what I will do when my present version does expire.
Good luck with it
I didn’t attempt definition updates over a VPN but I can confirm the definitions were no longer being updated on the desktop version of Kaspersky. I purchased my subscription via Kaspersky. On the other hand, the definitions are continuing to update for the Android version. My VPN usage on my phone is intermittent. Certainly Kaspersky knows I’m in the US. Even when I use my VPN I select a server in the US.
Licenses bought from Newegg seem to still function as well.
The Canadian Newegg.ca storefront still sells Kaspersky Premium. Don’t know if you’d have to set a VPN to Canada location to activate, but it may be worth a look.
So — select a non US server. Then the virus updates may work.
Not sure why anyone would use a vpn and select the same country they are in already.
Many people use a vpn to be able to watch/read media in a non US country - or similar. Likely there are other reasons I never needed to use.
interesting – thanks. I did look at their global website - using their own Kaspersky VPN to pretend to be from somewhere else - in the run up to all this months ago - but it immediately sent me on to the US website once I tried to buy anything.
To complete the picture: My Kaspersky subscription neared expiration in August but Kaspersky extended it to October 29 after the ruling from the US government. Given the geopolitical situation, I didn’t attempt to renew (I doubt Kaspersky would allow anyway) and I purchased an ESET subscription. While I could reinstall the desktop version, turn on the VPN and select a non-US version, I’ve moved on, installed ESET on the desktop and closed that chapter. As far as the Android version is concerned, US based with the VPN or not, the definitions for the Android version are continuing to update. I have ESET and Kaspersky installed on my phone with no issue. Also, there was a conflict between ESET and Kaspersky on the desktop. I’m assuming the Safe Money feature was causing an issue.
At this point, the only Kaspersky products I have installed:
Desktop: VPN and Password: VPN still connects but Password Check component no longer works.
Android: Kaspersky AV, VPN, and Password. Definitions are continuing to update but I’m noticing oddities in the app. Not certain what is taking place there. Password works without the check feature and VPN works.
