Trying to figure out how Surfshark is leaking my IP Address when torrenting

This is from IPleak.net .

Seems when torrenting Surfshark is leaking my IP, explaining how I got a DCMA. The Netherlands is my VPN location, which appears on Surfsharks P2P list.

UPDATE: On the advice of several helpful commenters, switched from QBitTorrent to Transmission, which resolved this issue. Thank you!

Try resetting or switching your protocols, within the SS client visit Settings > Help > Troubleshooting Tools > Reset Network — I suggest using OpenVPN UDP/TCP or Wireguard as for your protocols.

For qbittorent you need to bind the network interface in advanced to the one that you normally use (utun3 generally, but the utun* may vary).
Then you activate anonymous mode and require encryption in BitTorrent Tab

what torrenting client are you using?, Maybe the network the torrent client is using, is not through surfshark.

It always seems to be QBitTorrent that causes problems for many, I’ve used Transmission for years and never had an issue

If you’re still curious how to fix this, the answer is in qBittorrent Options > Advanced > Network Interface > choose the correct one.

In order to find which one is Surfshark, you need to open a command prompt (cmd) and do

ipconfig /all

And you need to choose the network interface that is Surfshark. For me it was Ethernet 3.

I checked mine on this, and had it list 3 dns, 2 in place of my VPN setting, and 1 oin my local location. CHecked, it was automatically using IKEv2, switched to Wireguard and tried again, now only showing one dns, the VPN location

Ooof now I will have to test this when I get home tonight!

Update: I reset the network. The protocol was already set to Wireguard. Exact same behavior on IPLeak.net

This worked for me. Didn’t even know I had the issue.

Thank you for these steps! Worked for me

I’m using QBittorrent, just updated earlier today. I don’t know as much about the settings for QBT, anything I should look for?

Thanks! I know this is an old post but this worked for me. The Network Interface I selected in qBittorrent was “Surfshark WireGuard” and that fixed the UDP leak I had.

This is on a Mac running Big Sur 11.6, Surfshark Version 3.9.0, protocol Wireguard

I deleted QBitTorrent and downloaded Transmission and it has resolved this issue. Thank you so much.

I don’t know about macOS, but you can try these, based on my windows pc.

I use IKEv2 protocol in SS. In the location tab, in the search bar, type P2P. some locations will filter out. Click on any location. in qBittorrent, go to Tools>Options>Advanced>network interface, and change according to your network interface. Which network to choose depends on your protocol. Since I use IKEv2, there will be an option ‘IKEv2 Surfshark Connection’.

I hope this works for you. Cheers.

yes same issue here the problem was QB torrent settings I was leaking also, until i changed this setting, and “forced my vpn” even though it was running.

I’ve switched SS to IKEv2, but under Preferences>Advanced>Network Interface, no option mentioning IKEv2 or Surfshark exists.

Sorry mate. Hope it gets cleared soon.

have you tried other torrent clients? Like Transmission?

There should be an options with a name like “wintun”, which is what Surfsharks Wireguard uses.

Edit: nvm you’re on MacOS, I’m not sure what interface is used there. Sorry :frowning:
