So, anyone use Tailscale with Mullvad on all their devices full time? How has it been?

Hey, it’s been two months since I’ve been using Tailscale + Mullvad. To mention, I have Proton VPN too, the Plus plan(it’s extremely cheap here).
Let’s talk about pricing first -
Mullvad (independent) - $5.45 / month for 5 devices
Mullvad (Tailscale Add-on) - $5 / month for 5 devices
I have benchmarked speeds and Mullvad seemed to have better ping and speeds when compared to Proton Plus.
The difference is negligible but I have the efficiency to use it on my devices running Tailscale along with NextDNS(DOH).
Overall it’s a really nice experience.
eat shit spez you racist hypocrite
It’s extra so probably not many
I’d been a Mullvad user since 2022 and only started using Tailscale last year. I switched to Tailscale + Mullvad in December and it’s been a better experience.
For me, the Tailscale app connects to the Mullvad servers faster than the Mullvad app used to. I don’t get disconnected anymore and I don’t have to manually add money to my Mullvad account. I haven’t had a problem with speed, and managing which devices use Mullvad is a lot easier.
I’ve only had a couple of drawbacks with it.
First, I can only choose a server location from Mullvad, but not the specific exit node. It’s not too big of a deal for me because I only ever used this to pick a faster exit node, which I haven’t had to do since switching.
Second, I have an older device that can’t update to a version of Tailscale that supports Mullvad exit nodes. It was one of the main devices that I used Mullvad with so I was bummed to find out it wouldn’t work on it.
I use it using Mullvad as exit node and NextDNS as custom DNS. It works great in terms of speed and reliability. Makes the setup much more easy.
I implemented it through docker on a raspberry pi but found that it would route some traffic not through Mullvad. This was confirmed by a support ticket with them as a bug, so I wouldn’t count on it yet.
I tested it out, the speeds are fucking awful. Without mullvad - 865down, 120 up. When mullvad exit node is enabled in a location close to me it drops to 90down/5up and becomes completely unusable because of the terrible up speeds.
If I’m not mistaken, you need to pay for the Mullvad exit nodes using your credit card. I feel like that almost defeats the purpose of using Mullvad altogether… and using Mullvad on individual devices works fine with Tailscale AFAICT. Can anyone shed some light on why you might want to use this feature?
Got a new account on Tailscale and I’m trying to get Mullvad, but it says something about being a prepaid account and I need to contact sales. Done it twice but haven’t heard back yet. Doesn’t give me a lot of faith. Mullvad responds quickly if you contact them.
Yeah I get almost a gig down on mullvad!
I’m thinking of paying for mullvad through tailscale, I’m just not sure if it’s too new and stable. Thanks!
Considering its founded by Google engineers
Fuckin’ Christ, can’t have anything nice around here.
I just tried Tailscale for the first time and it was cool. I’ve been happy with Mullvad for months, great speeds on everything.
Not sure how combining them will work at this point.
That’s very helpful! I figured it would be slower. Cool
Nice. Glad it’s working. I just got a GL router and Tailscale documentation says that the GL router isn’t ready to be an exit node yet, they’re working on it.
I’m having fun learning this stuff but I’m also tired of breaking things lol
I really want it to work though! You can only have one layer of VPN on android phones, so I haven’t to choose between being on the Mullvad or tailscale network, to achieve this I’ve had to use my home server as an exit node which runs through a Mullvad gluetun container
Hmmm. I haven’t set any exit nodes yet. Still learning everything. Mullvad ran out today so I’m not using Mullvad for a little to see how Tailscale works.
Hoping in a little while I’ll give mullvad a shot through tailscale.
Hope you can get connected properly!
Tailscale uses the vpn slot. So this makes it where you can use Tailscale and Mullvad exit node at the same time. That’s the only reason I use it, instead of getting mullvad directly.
This is my concern too. Mullvad isn’t given any information about Tailscale users (they don’t want the info) but Tailscale does have some info about which Tailnets are connected to Mullvad though they cannot see any data that’s being passed along. I use a private email relay for my Tailscale acct so I don’t know if that is a privacy concern or not. I can’t figure out if using these together affects privacy negatively vs Mullvad via its own app.
Well, keep the list of servers handy, you can get it from Mullvad’s website.
Also, there’s only Wireguard servers available for Tailscale.
Whenever Mullvad adds new servers to the WG list, it gets reflected to Tailscale too btw.
