Setting up SmartDNS on Apple TV (NORD VPN)

Has anyone successfully done this? I’ve got my DNS address from Nord, when I set it to manual on Apple TV I’m given 16 digit ip to change, the one from Nord is 10 digits, new to all of this so any help would be appreciated.

Also I’m unable to use Nord via my router

The NordVPN SmartDNS doesn’t work on Apple TV, it only seems to direct certain apps to their US region.

If you wanna get it working on ATV, sign up for ControlD, which is a smartdns service you can customise for each app.

My Apple TV is set up with ControlD and it points F1TV to Belgium, while all other apps work as normal. It’s worked seamlessly.

Is there 3 periods in the dns address? The actual number of digits can vary.

have you got a ‘how too’ guide for it by any chance?

Both had 4 periods just different total numbers in each

So for the 2nd section on Apple TV I left it as 0 and then adjusted the numbers after, when I go back onto the summary network on Apple TV, the DNS shows correctly to what Nord gave me, yet when I go into the app it won’t let me watch the current live practise

I just tried going through it myself but I’ll list what I ended up doing

  • Sign up for ControlD, they have a trial and then it’s £3 a month
  • Once you’re on their control panel, there’s an option to add a device. Choose Apple TV and it gives you a step by step picture guide on how to add the DNS.
  • once it’s added, you link the device to a “profile”, which is where you add your app-by-app location settings, it should be under the “services” page.
  • on my profile, the global default is set to “bypass all traffic”, and then in the services page I found the Formula1 option and chose the location I wanted (Belgium)
  • then it all just works. Every app works the same, except for F1TV and any other app you choose to configure. From then it just works in the background automatically and that’s it

Edit: here’s my settings on their page https://imgur.com/a/aaAATcE/

ok si I believe I’ve added the device as Apple TV, it’s showing me a guide on adding on to how add but via privacy & creating a new profile in that setting, does that sound about right?

I’ve gone onto my profile as well I can see F1, have enabled this & see the toggle for ‘bypassed’ is currently on

Thanks for the detailed description. I tried to recreate this on my Windows PC, and was successful.

However, I just cannot make it work on Nvidia Shield. None of the streaming apps work. Any tips?

Yes, you should be able to add the device and then create a profile. They give you some options as a baseline, I chose the “VPN Replacement” one.

From there you want the default rule set to the middle option “bypass all traffic”, and then the specific formula 1 entry to the right setting and choose a country. I’ve gone for Belgium and it works perfectly for streaming in the UK for me.

To add further, so the only time I’d need a VPN is more my iPhone or Mac?

Obviously I can’t add one to the Apple TV unless it went through the router

Hi there, does this till work for you? Im looking at options and wondering if it’d better than sticking Nord VPN on my appletv for F1

Controld may have an option to use iPhones as well but I’ve not tried anything. I also have NordVPN for my phone and that works perfectly for F1TV

Yeah still works for me, will test again come the new season, can’t see why it wouldn’t work.

Currently use Nord for my iPhone

Awesome thanks. I’ve got it running and all seems to be good. I can watch the past races and other ‘pro’ locked content so I think I’m good! Appreciate the reply
