I am running an old ProLiant Gen 8 at home with some plex, transmission and wanted to add a VPN so i can download torrent to my home server from anywhere and was hoping you guys have some nice suggestions and guides for me on how to achieve it. I am running my network on Mikrotik haf3 with static IP from the ISP and 1gb connection.
My general concept was setting up an OpenVPN and was hoping someone could point me out to a good guide on setting up a home VPN with OPenVPN.
There other thing i have heard is there is a Mikrotik network solution, so any guides, opinions suggestions for that are welcome as well.
People will recommend ZeroTier or Tailscale and, while I haven’t used either of these, they do look like fantastic solutions. For what seems like a pretty straightforward setup, you may want to consider these.
My personal preference is to use Wireguard. I used it on my old Hap AC2 and now on my Pi4 running OpenWRT. It’s easy to set up, works well and is pretty damn quick. You can look at this tutorial for setting up Wireguard on Mikrotik.
There are a lot of easy options like tailscale and some docker stuff… But I have trust issues and like to know what is under the hood. So here are some links to roll your own with OpenVPN and Wireguard. Same guy did both scripts and they are open and public. You will need a system to run it and you will need to forward the ports. The advantage to running on your firewall is that encryption can be a bit of a load and can slow down you firewall.
i’ve heard wireguard i think i watch that same tutorial a few years back while researching the router i should get i even think that was the reason i choose mikrotik one night while very up there but it seems i’ve forgotten about it thank you.
