I have searched over this sub-reddit and there were only two posts, which were more than 7 months ago, and being so close to beta I deemed it necessary to ask this.
Due to problems with the router I own, port forwarding is not possible and to host servers for me and friends I use the program LogMeIn Hamachi. It is easy to use and flexible, but for some games it requires a small bit of tech work to get working, and some games it just down-right fails to gain a connection.
Will the upcoming first beta stage support the use of this program, or will it be implemented in a hot patch. If you are not sure could one of the devs please test this as it is a feature many people rely on for multiplayer.
Hamachi should allow you to use the virtual IP address generated for any application you can enter one into, I think. Though, if I may recommend a better VPN software, it would be Evolve. There’s Tunngle too, but EvolveHQ is slightly easier to use.
he reason nobody has talked about this is because it is impossible to know anything until the beta is released or you get word directly from a chucklefish employee. so most likely you are just going to have to wait and see.
I seriously doubt they will be checking to see if their game is compatible with a program. Most people have routers that can forward ports, the minority who don’t or don’t want to learn how attempt to use hamachi with varying success. But they probably aren’t going to test it on hamachi for you.
Hamachi is a couple of steps down the OSI from starbound, so it’s Hamachi’s responsibility to be sure that higher layers don’t know the difference between it and a normal LAN.
What others are trying to tell you is this whatever issues you might of had with some games is not an issue of the games themselves. The architecture of Hamachi is nothing special, it is a vpn like hundreds before it. Hamachi is just simple and was created with gaming in mind, if any game, Starbound included, has a mode for ipx/spx, hamachi can work.
