Purdue blocking Netflix, Hulu, gaming sites in all classrooms after spring break
TIL online gambling in classrooms is a problem
While the base argument of banning these bandwidth-heavy, non-academic, and sometimes disruptive websites in the classroom is fairly sound, I don’t trust Purdue or ITaP to not fuck up the implementation. As such, I’m glad I have my VPN, even if I have no plans to watch Netflix in class.
What about people who are studying/spending time in classrooms outside class time? Like can you not listen to music streaming now while you study outside class hours?? And what about clubs that meet in classrooms??
well international students still can watch their foreign shows
This might help: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/
imo being able to listen to music in a classroom is important
So does it affect outside the classroom. Like right out the door in the hallway? Because sometimes when waiting for class ill just pull up netflix and finish a show.
While the idea is good in theory, this is so frustrating because I know it won’t work. Last semester in CL50 where they were conducting this experiment, I couldn’t even access sites like gmail and was never taken to the complaint page that they said they were redirecting people to.
wow, apart from purdue already tracking our average hours spent on campus and encouraging students to stay ON campus as it “correlates” to a higher GPA, i can see this doing the OPPOSITE as intended. if they want to encourage on campus studying, shouldnt they allow these sites in lobbys? classrooms that during the day arent being used? etc? i have a feeling students are gonna be spending a lot less time on campus
But hey. Frozen Tuition.
Wonder if that student bought any sandals…hopefully they didn’t…
So Reddit is still safe
I gambled with my grades on a daily basis
Think you read that wrong. It’s ‘gaming’ websites
Time to get a vpn
maybe i want to play LFD2 in class
At the level they’re taking it to, it doesn’t matter. Used bandwidth is used bandwidth, whether it’s someone sitting inside a lecture hall or right outside of it, they’re using the same access points. I suspect they’ll revise the plan as it progresses, like only blocking from 7:30a-5:45p, and stuff like that.
Any suggestions for domestic students looking for new entertainment?
Yeah for real. If this is straight up how it is with no downtime it will suck. I usually grab an empty classroom on weekends to study and just play Spotify while I’m working. I don’t bother anyone and I don’t have to worry about headphones. Losing that would be kind of a bummer
how do we even spend more time on campus when the campus can barely accomodate all students? And some buildings are way too warm? *couldn’t find a single seat at walc the other day
