PSA: Use a VPN to curb your lag

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up. I fired up my VPN after the lag started and it cleared it right up for me. I’m no expert so I don’t know why this seems to work so well but it dose work for me and my FC mates.

VPN in this case is your car taking a side road instead of the main highway, to avoid a crash up ahead.

Don’t ask me why car analogies work so well. They just do.

Edit: you may need to play around with VPN connection location, as the issue is a network node on the way to the servers. Have to find a connection that doesn’t take that road.

Do you have a recommendation for a VPN? I’m in the NA and am having Comcast issues every Tuesday so it delays my weekly clears to Wednesday.

I used Mudfish in the past but I can’t seem to get it to work right lately because it gives me an error that says something like ‘MTU path is wrong’. I know the FAQ said it might work anyways despite the error but I can’t tell if it helps my connection.

I use a tunnel, and it works wonders for me. Been using Pingzapper for nearly four years, and it makes the game actually playable due to the horrid routing in Australia/New Zealand.

If you’re having CONSISTENT lag, 100% give it a go!

So is there a free VPN program that works for this or do I have to pay for another sub to be able to play this game on Tuesdays

Fuck that. I will not pay another fee to play a game I pay a sub for already.

Mud fish never gave me an improvement personally, but WTFast definitely gives me a consistently smooth connection. Though it’s definitely on the more expensive side of things

Pay to use the Internet to pay to use the VPN to pay to play FFXIV. And if you’re on a PS4, pay to use Playstation Live too! I love capitalism…

For those using mudfish, I think you need to set it TCP for it to work. It didn’t do anything appreciable until I did that.

I have been using ExitLag, and while I dislike having to pay an extra sub, it has stopped all of the lag/dropped packet stuff on days like today. The other downside is that ACT doesn’t work with it in WinPCap mode, so you have to run ACT as administrator. I had bought some Mudfish credit, but it never really seemed to make much of a difference (although I never tried it after the NA servers moved).

+1 to Pingzapper

Been using it since way back when it was called WoWTunnels (2010?)

Also from ANZ

Following Potatisk’s comment, I use Mudfish. It’s not a sub, but it’s not free. It’s pay-per-data. I recently paid $5 for 40-something GB of data, which should last me…a decade I think, since I don’t always use it (only when I’m having major lag).

I think there is a free trial/bonus data you can do, for something like 200mb or something. I used this originally some 3-4 years ago, and it held me until recently, when I decided to actually buy data.

Three minor issues I do have with it:

  1. Install and running the first few times is a little confusing. Hard to tell if it was actually working or not, unless the game was consistently lagging for minutes on end.

  2. It’s unclear to me if I need to have the game closed first, run Mudfish, then open the game to let it work, or if I can have the game already running, and start up during.

  3. I have Malwarebytes running, and it flagged a specific IP connection as a Trojan. It was a connection to Vietnam, which made no sense to me why the program was connecting there. I had a hard time finding out if it was actually a trojan or a false positive. Turns out its a false positive, and you can tell Mudfish to blacklist any connections based on location, so I just blisted connections Vietnam.

You don’t have to pay for PS+ or whatever nits called to play XIV on PS4. But I get where you’re coming from.

No Playstation subscription needed for PS4. This is why we havent seen it on XBox as Microsoft wants XBox Gold mandatory but SE says nope.

Cant have the game running first. I mean, you could, but as soon as you activate the VPN, you’ll get disconnected when the connection changes.

I dont remember but dig and you’ll find it. It’s the FastConnect stuff.
