Proton VPN leaks your data and is not secure, see other comments in the tread for more detail.
AirVPN doesn’t have a great rep?
I’ve tried other VPN’s out there (obviously not Proton), but AirVPN is probably the best I’ve used.
I’ll check that out, thanks
All free VPNs sell your information, likely including the free tier of Proton VPN.
They do. I just know. I have connections who work as sys admins.
One thing I noticed is it lacks a central feature I rely on - automatically connecting on unsecured or “untrusted” networks. Super handy when hopping on random networks (I don’t have data). Besides that, I’ve been running it all day and haven’t noticed any other downsides.
If privacy isn’t a concern, not much beyond dirt cheap custom domain support. I actually forward all my mail from my old Gmail address and rely on my Gmail address for giving out to people because they know Gmail and is just easier. I do have custom spam filters in Gmail as well so a lot of stuff never reaches my ProtonMail.
if you don’t use an email client, and don’t want to pay, and like using a web browser instead, then proton is a huge yes. very secure (they claim and many others trust them), and love the 2 step login process. i cant use it, due to being more a email client user, and i don’t have a CC to sign up for their paid packages, which allows you to use their bridge.
You’re either misinformed or lying…
Also free product tests from various companies exist in nearly all sectors. Offering a free sample of a quality product is a great way to win over customers.
If a company offers the full suite for free, something’s fishy though. I believe having some 3-4 free servers with restricted speed and usage (no torrenting, for example) falls under the reasonable “product sample” category.
How does that work? I’m pretty curious. I thought you’d have to do some sort of package inspection, which is not something I’d want my VPN doing to my traffic.
Even if you needed some data, it wouldn’t take more than 100 requests after which you can detect it, which can easily be stored in ram and protected from any outside access, and purged from memory by garbage collector once the isConnectionP2P function returns true or false.
I like learning new things.
On the other hand, there is actual proof PIA doesn’t keep logs as the cops tried and PIA had nothing.
I think it’s just a comment of if you want to pay for a VPN, PIA is cheaper and appears to offer similar service with more server regions. Plus no “high/highest” speed locking.
I can’t find their (proton) full server list to compare, but it doesn’t look as full in their little stock image. The TOR vpn looks neat tho.
its a bit heavy of a read to interpret at times but the sidebar of /r/vpn has this handy sheet 10 Best VPN Services 2025: Security, Features + Speed
probably want to change the number of entries shown and use the search or something to view more or download the xls/csv’s
Tunnel bear is garbage.
I haven’t tried ProtonMail. I know that there are plenty of alternatives out there that are good, if not great.
I’d be shocked to see ProtonMail (mostly because it’s new), to have all the bells and whistles other VPN companies offer.
Can’t speak too much about the Android app…but the PC app wasn’t great when I used it (in terms of features).
From my usage, PIA was quite slow during congestion hours.
I want a VPN that is is buttery smooth for 24/7 use. When I turn on my PC, it automatically starts AirVPN. I never notice that I’m using a VPN.
The privacy, security, etc was worth it for me. So I paid a lil more for it and upgraded to AirVPN.
Speeds are a hit or miss, especially during congestion hours IMO.
It had latency issues for 24/7 use.
Also, it could never work with my university or work.
