OpenVPN Client Configuration

Can anyone help me figure out how to configure my ER7206 as an OpenVPN client? I’m using NordVPN. In the controller, I added the VPN policy as a client-to-site VPN and set the VPN type to VPN Client - OpenVPN. I have the remote IP and port (1194) and I imported the config file for the server I want to use. I have the LAN selected as well as the WAN port I want to use. However, I can’t figure out how to make it connect. Shouldn’t there be an option to add my NordVPN username and password?

So I decided to ditch this for now. I chatted with Nord and they said without the ability to add credentials, there was no way to use OpenVPN with their service using this router.

I decided to use the L2TP connection to connect as a client to my office VPN server. It is connected, but it doesn’t appear to actually be passing data through the VPN tunnel. My public IP doesn’t change to the remote network’s IP and I’m unable to communicate with the devices on the remote network. However, it does work if I just connect to the VPN with my phone or laptop.

I have t been able to find a guide to help me with this. Any ideas on how to do this or is there a specific guide for making this work?

I think your trying to do the same as this other post. In my experiences with my er605 and full Omada setup the VPN doesn’t work this way on our routers, Its just for remote access back to your home network.

previously asked post I commented on

This isn’t a direct answer about nordVPN but you may gain some insight from this setup. It routes all internet traffic through the remote openvpn server. In the video the auto login profile is used so no username or password is required.

I have tried using Mullvad VPN but it also doesn’t work. I’m guessing because of the way the ovpn configuration file is created and exported.

A while back, TP-Link released a firmware update for the ER7206 that allowed multiple OpenVPN connections with certification+username+password - it was working perfectly and this is how I had it configured - https://paulhiggs.github.io/tp-link-vpn/

That is what is available today, but the OpenVPN client that they have is now ‘old’ and no longer connects with VyprVPN, ExpressVPN etc. I helped the TP-Link support engineers get logs from the failed OpenVPN session establishment and they confirmed this was the problem. To date, they are still working on updating their OpenVPN client stack - I have had to chaneg my configuration and now use two GL-Inet MT-2500 devices to bridge the VLans to OpenVPN services.

I’ve seen TP Link reply in their official forums that adding user/password support is on their roadmap. Of course that’s no guarantee about if or when it will get done. Just a glimmer of hope.

Yeah, the TP-Link client seems to still be old/poorly implemented… or it might be that my router is not getting additional updates.

Paul, Could you tell me how you got useful logs out of the openvpn client in Omada? I’m trying to get my ER605 to connect to one of my own openvpn servers and I feel like I’m working with 1 hand tied behind my back not having logs from the client side.

That would be great! Saves me 1 more docker container
